Kristie16
I just started a new temporary job as a prestigious company three days ago. I feel like I'm already failing. I'm in way over my head and my heart is just not into my chosen career the way it once was. I'm at a loss for what to do. I feel like every day I make a fool of myself. Anybody been in the same boat? proactivedreamer
I can relate to having a change of mind, in terms, of chosen career. I think it is important to feel connected to what you do for a living and if you don't then it is best to try something else. Have you thought about what you feel connected to? I mean what are your passions or things that excite you? Is there anything you would like to learn that you could turn into a source of income? I am still going through this process myself. I am unemployed, have no source of income but have a general idea of what inspires me and how I want to channel it into a source of income. I think something that helps me is to think about what things I really enjoy doing and go from there.

Give this time. It's nerve racking to start a new job, everything is different, you don't know people, how things are, the dynamic at work etc.. You aren't failing! You're learning as you go and that can be scary. There's always a certain amount of time for getting used to the newness of a job and the people, the work. Soon, everything will just click and you'll feel so much better. Don't give up!! You can do this! What do you mean you feel like a fool? In what way? Also, what can you do to get your heart back into it? Find that passion again?
Scoop88
I think a lot of times that will happen for any job. I'm in a basic part time position while I search for a full time position in my field. It is not even close to what I want to be doing but every experience you have is going to prepare you more for the next one. I expect to make mistakes in any new job, and I do, but the point is that you learn from them. Especially if you are at a prestigious company, there is probably a lot of pressure to succeed and since you are unfamiliar with the environment and the work it adds to the level of stress. Like the others said, just don't give up. Every day you learn something you didn't know the day before and soon enough it will all come natural. If once you get a little more acquainted with the position, you still feel like it isn't for you then keep an eye open for a new position. I wouldn't say quit right away since the job market is pretty tough at the moment, but if something else comes along then don't hesitate to apply for it. But give your current job some time. You might come to really like it once you get used to it.
Author Kristie16
Thanks, everyone. I'm going to stick with it. It's only three and a half months, but it's at a very high-profile company where my work is scrutinized a lot. I was already kind of going through a blah period with my career. I'm fairly young (25), but I interned and held jobs in my chosen field since I was a freshman in college, so I've been doing it for about seven years. And I know a lot of industries and fields are slow right now, but mine is dying. There's cutbacks every day. It's really hard to stay motivated. Getting this temp job was cool, because it does say something about me and they think I'm good enough for it. But I just don't like the pressure. I was already kind of questioning my love for my chosen field going in, and having all this pressure has just caused me so much stress. I didn't sleep at all last night. But I am learning a lot and it will look good on my resume. But I never questioned my love for what I did before very recently. And its what I got my degree in, so if I don't do it, what will I do? All this coupled with moving to a new city where I don't really know anyone, a new office environment and a recent break up with my boyfriend have made the past week really hard. I feel like I'm just going through the motions.
sammyd
Hi, I know how you feel, i've just started a new job and felt totally out of my depth for the first week (even though i have the experience). I've put it down to unfamiliarity with my surroundings, people, way the company do things, etc), and my second week has been much better:) Stick at it for a few more weeks at least, and don't worry about the other people, they will know you're new, and hopefully give you a hand:)
