starryeyed12
Can you drink coffee or energy drinks like red bull if you are taking bupropion?
Author starryeyed12
Anybody??? This must be a bad question to ask here. I looked online and couldn't find any first hand answers...nothing in the pamphlets either. I think the script I'm on has something of a stimulant in it and I just don't want to get crazy jitters if I drink coffee or red bull. I've also never been on anything like this so I'm not sure if you have to ease into it before you can drink coffee or even alcohol. Just wondering if anyone had any first hand answers. betterdeal
I was on Citalopram and wasn't told to stop caffeine. However, I did stop caffeine because it was stressing me out and stopping me sleeping anyway. Try reducing your caffeine intake to one or two cups of coffee a day for a few days, then just stop drinking it. Caffeine is a powerful stimulant and if you're stressed or anxious it doesn't help you long term.
Feelin Frisky
Bupropion is generic for Welbutrin. There's no medical reason to cease caffeine use while taking Welbutrin. Welbutrin can however cause insomnia or difficulty achieving sleep in some persons and caffeine would compound that condition. If you're not troubled by sleep difficulties then it's fine to swig your Red Bull while on Buproprion.
Author starryeyed12
Thank you for the replies. I have trouble sleeping not associated with caffeine intake. From what u guys said, it sounds like it varies by individual. I think I'm going to try it. I miss my morning boost!
D-Lish
I took Wellbutrin for a year and a bit and I still drank coffee. Just don't drink it too late into the day, limit it to the morning. Wellbutrin really increased my energy level, and I lost a lot of weight while on it. If I took my wellbutrin dose too late in the day, I wouldn't be able to sleep. I had a sleeping 'script while I took it because it gave me so much energy. It wiped my appetite out completely- I had to remind myself to eat- I could literally skip eating for 24 hours and the coffee on top of that just made it worse.
skydiveaddict
Can you drink coffee or energy drinks like red bull if you are taking bupropion? Why don't you just ask your doctor?
Author starryeyed12
Why don't you just ask your doctor? Fair question. My doctor is not an easy man to get a hold of. He, nor the pharmacist, mentioned coffee or any other stimulates when directing me about the drug. They just said to cut back on alcohol. I was Wikipediaing the drug when I got home and read that it is somewhat of an upper. It got me thinking that my coffee or occasional red bull could send me into jittery panic at work or something. But no where really says if u can or should.

I will definitely keep this in mind. I just started taking it Monday, so I'm still easing my way into it. It makes me a little uncomfortable putting something like this into my body everyday. bc83
Wow. I will definitely keep this in mind. I just started taking it Monday, so I'm still easing my way into it. It makes me a little uncomfortable putting something like this into my body everyday. Thank you for the reply. I second the words of D_lish - I've been on Wellbutrin for years, had the weight loss and increase in energy, too. You get used to that. It increased my sex drive at first, but that may have been due to the lessening of my depression b/c I started the medicine. I too have to take something to sleep, due to the Wellbutrin. Oddly enough, some people (like me) can have depression and ADD - so I take Ritalin (known stimulant) as necessary, on top of the Wellbutrin. And I have a cup of coffee every morning, too. So I don't worry about the caffeine . . . . I hope the Wellbutrin works for you - some classes of antidepressants won't work depending on the person, or have crummy side effects, so if this one doesn't work for you (give it at least a month), try another class. Good luck!
LeaningIntoTheMuse
You probably shouldn't, but I do.
