Are long term relationships really for us?

This article seems to fit right in with my life so far.

So im wondering since when did the idea of long term relationships come about? Why do we want them? Were we always like this? Or did we evolve from pre historic times to seek out different partners in order to ensure the survival of the species?

Were long term relationships encouraged a couple thousand years ago before health care to help prevent the spread of STD's? Maybe we only stayed together because the church said it was a sin not too?

Im thinking we were hunters and gathers for the last 250,000 years before the modern era (circa 5,000 years). And sometimes I think we are still living in the mythological times since we still believe in magical dieties that live in the sky and underground. No offense.

Just thinking out loud here. Im a scatterbrain by nature. Curious on opinions. Are long term relationships unrealistic by nature for our species? Or are long term relationships an attempt by our species to show we are trying a change in pace from our past?

We say we want to be with one person in our heads, but biologically speaking we want more?

Maybe I just think too much. Overload *Poof*
