What is a healthy weight loss ammount per month

Recommended Posts

I am doing p90X and following my own diet by eating healthy foods no junk foods and healthy snacks. I have been doing this since March 7th and as of this morning lost 11 pounds.

I am wondering if this is a normal and acceptable level regarding where I should currently be with weight loss?

Thanks for all your replys

If your interest is to preserve as much muscle mass as possible during weight loss, the slowest you can go is the best, say, .5 lbs a week.

If you don't care that much about retaining muscle, you could drop 2-3 lbs a week and still be considered healthy. Since you're basically 4 weeks into your "cut", and you've lost 11 lbs, that means that you've lost a little under 3 lbs a week.

Sounds like you're doing "ok" to me. :)

Hm.. that's pretty fast.

I've been eating less/doing rigorous exercises since January 3 and have gone from ~184 to ~166 lb so ~18 lb in 14 weeks. Of course, I'm trying to GROW muscle mass as I loose weight so perhaps this is part of the disparity between us :) Also I'm a guy.. so realizing you're a girl perhaps this comparison is irrelevant :p

OP, I have seen women totally transform their bodies on this system.

Everyone of them said the same thing- things gradually came into place in the first month- but into the second and third month- BHAM- what a difference. The inches that came off were astounding.

3Lbs a week is healthy!

I've lost 5 lbs in the last week- simply from going through the break up diet. THAT'S NOT HEALTHY- what you're doing is and I applaud your dedication:)

Thanks everyone!

I rally appriciate your replies. I feel like my body was screaming for me to do something to make it healthier. I do feel stronger and happier as well and feel like I am also able to handle stresses better than before. I also feel emotions coming to the surface that I burried and am finally able to let them go. I have a long road ahead because I have much weight to loose but I am doing my best on the program.

Listen to this man, he clearly knows his onions.

I would advise you don't lose your muscle though (so only lose 1lb a week if you don't want to lose muscle), it's not sexy for a woman to be skinny. Losing fat is cool, if you did some weights and changed your diet and built some muscle it'd be better IMO.

Not telling you what to do just saying from a man's perspective, woman with muscle (not bodybuilder size, athlete size) is sexy.

Yes I am doing P90X so you are building muscle as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

The operative missing fact is your starting point, sorry if I missed it. For someone with lots of extra weight to start, losing 20-30 pounds in the first month to 1.5 months is fine even while adding muscle mass, as much of what you lose is water. For someone who starts without much extra weight, 1 pound a week may be too much if you want to preserve as much muscle as possible. So the answer is that there is no generally correct answer. If you started at 160 as a female of average height, 11 pounds in one month is fine, if you started at 130, a bit too much in one month.

The general recommendation is that your weight shouldn't fluctuate more than about a pound and a half a week. That's up or down.

That's not to say that is the right number for everyone, and it's also not clear as to what that 1.5 is made of. You could flip back and forth a couple pounds a day, at any given time you've got water and other .. stuff (:p) floating around.

If you're consistently (over several weeks) losing a pound every couple days though.. that's unhealthy unless you're on some sort of liquid diet or other thing supported by a doctor (hopefully)

This is your first month, so you'd probably lose a bit faster out the gate, especially if your diet was primarily rubbish and water-free before. In the last week-and-a-half, I've lost 7 pounds. I'm assuming this is partially water weight...and I have a fairly active lifestyle in general (plus I'm young).

I have lost 15 pounds since March 7th. I am not sure if that is good however I feel that I have toned up as well and have gotten stronger.

I have alot of weight to loose and am excited so far with the results, I will keep on going.
