I really need assistance: gift for my best friend in Mexico?

Recommended Posts

So, I have this absolutely amazing best friend who I love like a sister in Mexico. She used to live here in the United States, but she was illegally here (transported as a child), and had to leave three years ago. Since, we are always keeping in touch when we can, and we have future plans of meeting up sometime in Canada, since I don't feel comfortable traveling down to Mexico.

As of right now, she has very little money to her name, no real job (she interns a couple times a week for about 10 dollars a day), and last I heard, no one in her family is working. She's usually living at her church many days in the week, and where she gets her internet connection.

The thing is, is that I want to give her a great birthday present that wont only be useful to her since she needs so many things down there right now, but also that shows that I love and care about her, and to remind her of the best friend that she still has back here. She has many times said that I'm her only real friend, and though I hate that fact, I want to be a great friend to her and help her out where and when she needs it.

So, I'm planning on sending down a handmade card, $100 dollars, and 2 clarinet reeds that she said that she's been wanting so she could play her clarinet again. But like I said, I want to give her something else, that she can use and love and remember me by. Just giving money and reeds isn't enough for me, since I'm used to giving great presents that really come from the heart, and she deserves presents like that.

So, if you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them! Some people have already suggested: clothes, an ipod, music, games, dvds, pictures, phone minutes, etc. Each of these are great ideas, but I've found catches that have come with each of them...any new suggestions would be absolutely amazing. Thanks!
