StandingO
The so called pistol squat. One legged squat with the free leg straight out infront. I have been trying to do these off and one for months now and I still can't do one. My GF can do them easliy but she is very flexible and has very strong legs for her body weight. Anyone else tried them. They seem ridiculously hard.
shadowofman
Nope. I have pretty strong legs but my knees are ****e. And I fall over.
sb129
Work on your core strength...I think that helps with stability.
Chocolat
I can do them down to bench level. I'd like to get to where I can do them without the bench. I recently saw this video but have not tried it.
tman666
Nice Chocolat, linking to Waterbury! Following his programs years ago is what helped me get out of a perpetual cycle of crappy "Flex" magazine routines. As far as pistol squats go, I can't do them to the floor, but I can do them on a bench. They require a ton of relative hip strength. Also, some people have better mechanics for doing them then others. Us tall guys (6'4" here) tend to suck at any sort of squat compared to the shorties.

I am only 5'6" but I have looong legs -- 33" inseam. Going to parallel is a long trip.
Author StandingO
Its like a signal is missing from the brain so the required muscles do not trigger. I agree that probably some more hip strength would help too. I am not surprised that the only person to say they can do this so far is a woman. They seem to have more balance, flexibility and a better centre of gravity for this exercise.
sb129
Make that two- I can do them and I am a woman.
PelicanPete
I can't go to the floor but i can get pretty close, I do a solid 3 or 4 reps with good form before it gets sloppy. Ive never really done these but I do lot of running and cycling. Im at 6'1 or 6'2, but im still a young man that's a bit of a fitness nut.
Author StandingO
It's good to know that some men can do these to In my circle the woman are definately better at this than the guys. The women keep bragging that they have stronger legs.
Author StandingO
Ok, finally I can do one on these but only if my weight is forward like a figure skater and with my right leg only. Getting close with my left. My GF can do 10 or more. Any former figure skaters out there. If so, what is the keys to doing these sit spins or pistol squats. Do girls usually have a easier time learning these because they are more flexible and don't have to lift and control as much body weight? I think with longer legs and a reliatively (muscular) top heavy upper body it must make it much more difficult compared to women with relatively light upper bodies and shorted legs. Seems like certain muscles don't trigger. Almost gave up on these but I am determined to be able to do a few eventually. GF is no help because she is very flexible and has very strong legs from her body building days so these are very easy for her.
