Disillusioned
I'm drawn to the prehistoric proto-religions like the witchcraft of Europe and the voodoo of Africa. IMO they have enough in common that I wouldn't rule out an ancient connection. OTOH I've had an aversion to things Central Asian and Middle Eastern ever since I could remember. I watched every documentary I could find, and some twice. There was something oddly comforting or familiar about it. I never could figure it out. Today I still watch some, but it's hard to find a show I haven't seen a hundred times already. I also developed a burning interest in religion at about the same time. I left the one I was raised with at that time and began looking for a new one. I remember that Buddhism always had the greatest appeal, but I never knew much about it. Then religion fell to the back burner as depression took over my life. Then I discovered beer and women. Fast forward to my early thirties and I find myself standing in the religion section picking out a small book on Buddhism. Still don't know what brought me there. Now I can't stop reading Buddhist books. And also consider myself one. A Buddhist, not a book. I think there's more, but those are the two that stand out the most.

Ross MwcFan
ROSS! Your picture, I love it. When you say ordinary places, you mean places around town, right? Thanks. Just urban places and not so urban places. What they usually have in common, is that they look/have a bit of a ghetto feel to them. I've never liked the feeling I get from posh places. Author cerridwen
@Ross--ditto for me on the ghetto places. If these experiences point to past lives, all I know is I was never a temple scribe or member of the queen's court. My job was likely emptying chamber pots.
Rayne03
Yes definatley, they feel like places where I belong. But they're always more ordinary places. I too have had very strong feelings through out my life about specific places, more like one place where I feel I belong for whatever reason. I have no explanation for it, but it's always been there. My mind will drift to it, or sometimes, I will hear a song and it will take me right there.
applefruit
yes, since i was a small child ive been drawn to certain things as if they seem very farmiliar but ive never assosciated with those things in this lifetime. some of those things are castles royal things such as princesses, kings, queens, horses mideivel times mideival and victorian style dress opera music the forest i have had recurrent dreams and daydreams all my life that im a tall blonde young woman and im wearing mideivel style clothes, long dress like some princess and im running fast through the forest and i see white horses. a scene straight out of robin hood in this life tho im not so tall and do not have blonde hair. ive always thought that that was me from a past life and me running was the end for me like running from knights with swords unless im confusing that with a barbie i may have had im not sure im also drawn to certain pictures of europe such as castles, green hillsides, the forest, the sea, many castles, cottages and europe folklore such as garden gnomes, fairies, leprechuan ive never been to europe maybe i was a mideival princess? i still carry with me a sense of royalty even tho no relatives of mine in this life are royal and ive lived a more average life
EricaH329
I haven't read this entire thread, but I immediately knew what you were talking about. I don't feel as strongly as I do about a certain era. It goes much further than just admiring, I truly feel a 'connection' to it. I'd admit a bit more, but it's a bit embarrassing Needless to say, I fully understand exactly what you mean! It's as though you 'belong' in a different time. I do have my beliefs about that, but I will spare LS of all of that
spiderowl
Yes, I've experienced the same feelings and ended up studying these periods in history and learning the language that attracted me. I have no idea why I am drawn by them, maybe something inherited/in the genes? Carl Jung has interesting ideas about phenomena like these. I think that his theory of archetypes might be of interest to you. It's worth reading about. It may or may not explain it to you. I think there's definitely something in the idea of archetypes but I'm not sure what it can apply to as the archetypes are all-pervading.
Author cerridwen
Wow! I hope everyone who participated on this thread finds it as fascinating as I have. Truly. People's contributions were so interesting. Spidermonkey, I'm learning Russian myself, propelled by my love of the sound of it. I've never read Jung but his Red Book sits in my house. EricaH329, don't embarrass yourself! You saying you knew exactly what I meant made me feel REALLY good, thanks!!! applefruit, my suspicions are the same as yours and these are past life memories. It's all I can come up with. Rayne03, song for me isn't a trigger but language is or images of the Old West. I get a kind of fluttering in my chest. It's hard to explain but something tells me you understand.
TragicAlliance
I SO get this! At the risk of being mocked/flamed or otherwise starting something... I believe I've got some sort of extrasensory/psychic ability. I can sense spirits, actually see them sometimes... I've dreamt of disasters and events happening in vivid detail only to have them happen in real life days later. Anytime I dream, something from that dream WILL come true. As a result of my strange abilities, I find myself attracted to cemeteries. I'll get drawn to certain headstones out there... sometimes if I touch them, I actually get visions. But anyway... I've had several out-of-body-experiences in which I've "traveled" to these places I see in my mind and my dreams. The two places I can remember in great detail is me standing on a large hill overlooking a waterfront town... the other is either a courtyard or a graveyard with a metal gate... it's usually very chilly in this place, and often nighttime. Sometimes it rains. The air smells extremely clean. (I also had an OOBE in which I "traveled" to my ex-boyfriend's house and slept alongside him in his bed.) I also occasionally have the image of a 17-year-old male wearing dirty brownish military-like clothing. He often shows up when I'm laying in my bed... he stands in the doorway and just stares at me until I turn around to face him, in which he then vanishes. He gives off a... mean, bitter vibe. Something tells me his name is "Michael" or something else that starts with a M... I don't know why, though. And on occasion I'll also see the image of a woman. She seems to be young, but I can't put an age on her. She has long brown hair, gentle features, bluish-grey eyes, and is pale in complexion. The third thing I've seen is... my ex swore he's seen it, too. It was a gargoyle-like creature with red eyes and dark grey skin. It appeared in the corner of a room I was in one night while on webcam with my ex, who panicked when he said he spotted it himself. The feeling of fear that creature caused in me actually made me flee the room... it appeared again a few days later and made me feel so frightened I actually had to LEAVE my house... TragicAlliance
If there is another person in my family sensitive to this sort of thing, they've not come forward. My mother says she believes in my abilities because of two "evidences" she has witnessed of me. The first was when I was 2... one day I suddenly started reading things on my own. Not little words, but entire billboards. She was so spooked by this that she finally asked me, "Where did you learn to read?" I smiled at her and replied simply, "My brain told me to." Second evidence came a few years later... I developed an imaginary friend. But instead of it being a child my own age... she tells me it was an adult and that I had a connection to it that extended beyond that of a normal imaginary friend.

In the whole of my life, I have had three dreams which have come true, pretty much the next day. I find it hard to believe that people can predict the future, because the furture hasn't happened right? It doesn't exist right now. But at the same time, what happened seems way too much of a coincidence. So I don't know what to think.

I just have the visceral reactions to certain things. For instance yesterday, the western Open Range came on TV. A shot of the rolling hills and wide open plains sent my heart beating fast, beating hard. And again, there was that longing, that ache for it in the bit of my stomach, it's the best way to describe it.

worlybear
Last year I took my daughter to a famous northen city. We visited the museum that had a life size mock up of an earlier era. I happened to glance down from the exhibition I was studying, to the lower level where the main street was. I was so overwhelmed I had to sit down. I knew the street- I recognised it- I had dreamt it EXACTLY as it appeared 2 days previously. And no, I hadn't visited it before or seen a brochure- it had been an impulse holiday only booked that week. I'd never been there before and I've no logical explanation. But I definitely knew it!
