Author OpenBook
A long time ago I saw Diana in person in America. It was a long time and I was a kid, but I got close enough to where she smiled at me. It was cool and I fell in love with her. she came across the St.Lawerance in a private boat near Clayton, NY and the neat thing was...sure their were cameras, but not like you see on TV with her.. I think she really liked us people and our area here in North NY:) Because we didn't treat her like a friggin freak...just good ole northern hospitality. Yes, I remember her visits to NY and other places over here. She loved America, especially after her divorce. She said it made her feel so empowered and energized (or something to the gist of that). Well, we definitely loved her too. And still do.
Author OpenBook
O.M.G. Tony Blair (TONY BLAIR!!) wasn't even f*cking INVITED to the wedding??!? I cannot believe that. What is UP with THAT??????????
anne1707
O.M.G. Tony Blair (TONY BLAIR!!) wasn't even f*cking INVITED to the wedding??!? I cannot believe that. What is UP with THAT?????????? Allegedly because he is not a Knight of the Garter (Brown was not invited either for same reason). All other former prime misters were invited - who are all Tory as it happens. It is reckoned by many to be a deliberate act from Downing Street. When Charles & Diana married, ALL former PMs were invited regardless of whether they were a Knight of the Garter or not. Taramere
O.M.G. Tony Blair (TONY BLAIR!!) wasn't even f*cking INVITED to the wedding??!? I cannot believe that. What is UP with THAT?????????? I think Cherie Blair isn't a big fan of the royal family....and they're probably not fans of hers, after she shared with the nation the news that baby Leo was conceived during a visit to Balmoral because she was too embarrassed to take contraceptives there. Gordon Brown wasn't invited either, but that's probably because they didn't want his dour face there. More on point, neither the Blairs nor the Browns are personal friends of the royal couple as far as I know. I think generally because it wasn't a state wedding (William not being first in line to the throne) the couple were determined to limit the numbers of politicians attending...and wanted it to be more about friends, people working for the charities the prince is connected with etc. Due to long standing connections with royals from other nations, there would be a definite social obligation to invite them....but Sarah Ferguson didn't get an invitation...though her two daughters were there with Prince Andrew. They probably bowed to pressure to have the current PM and leaders of the opposition, and also leaders from Commonwealth Countries...but you'll note that they didn't invite the Obamas, the Sarkozys and other political heads of state. They did invite two past PMs of the UK. John Major - because he was appointed in some sort of guardian role over Princes Harry and William when they were kids, and Margaret Thatcher because she is a Lady of the Garter. Blair and Brown haven't been awarded the order of the garter, and I doubt they ever will be. I don't know that the two of them would have received invitations even if it had been a state wedding. Probably not.
TaraMaiden
If I were to ever get married again, I'd only invite the very nicest closest friends, and have a really quiet do. Really quiet. And quick. Why waste all day?

She did have a remarkable disdain for them. But still... Tony Blair?? The most gifted statesman out of England since Winston Churchill??
TaraMaiden
I don't think there can possibly be an equivalent to the Republicans.... And while I get rayne's bewilderment, and that she doesn't 'get' the royal wedding, while we have Royalty, America has celebrities... The Fonda Family, the Douglases (look at all the stuff about Michael, his cancer, and Katherine's BiPolar diagnosis.... (Katherine - there's a similarity right there!) Jennifer Aniston and Brad, and the Big furore over Angelina.... So your Hollywood Big-Bods are America's equivalent....

Taramere
Oh, that's right I'd forgotten about that. She did have a remarkable disdain for them. But still... Tony Blair?? The most gifted statesman out of England since Winston Churchill?? I'm probably wrong in thinking he wouldn't have been invited if it had been a state wedding. They would probably have had all past PMs in that situation...but it was a private wedding. I know how ludicrous that sounds, given all the publicity, a public holiday being announced etc, but technically it wasn't a state occasion. So they didn't have to pack it with politicians, and you can sympathise with them not really wanting to. Who, given the choice, would want their big day to be more like a World Summit than a joyous occasion? I think the fact that it wasn't a state wedding was part of the reason it had a happier feel about it. They got to invite more of their own friends, and ordinary members of the public who have done good works. Which would create a nicer vibe in the church than if it were just filled with dignitaries and politicians. I bet you Prince William's mother would have preferred it that way too, if she'd had the choice.

It's my understanding that Kate never met Diana. Of course, there's a tremendous amount of Diana in Wills... so I guess that says something right there about her take on it. I think she'd be really pleased that Westminster Abbey was turned into a happy place for her son yesterday. Thanks for posting this thread, btw OB. I didn't want to start a thread as I thought it would probably get hijacked by people anxious to express their disinterest in the occasion....so I'm glad you enjoyed it too. I guess that makes you, me, Ariadne, the people we watched it with, the crowds who flocked to London to watch...and whoever the two billion other people who tuned in to observe the occasion might have been. Taramere
pfft their wedding will be nothing compared to the King and Queen of LS getting married in June. Is it that close?? What's the date, and are the two of you getting married in the US or in Australia? So now there is a direct marriage competition on. You and Citizen Erased, versus Tara Maiden and her husband to be. Actually, this could all be quite prophetic. In his (rather long and boring) speech yesterday, the Bishop of London told the royal couple that they would set the world on fire. Fire - pyro. Citizen Erased...woman whose ordinary citizenship is erased as a result of marriage. Perhaps we should petition for your ceremony to take place in Westminster Abbey. Conducted by somebody with a bit more brevity than yesterday's bunch, though.

I had no idea Taramaiden was getting married as well. cool:) That is classic. I never had a desire to visit London personally, but after seeing Westminster on the telly and CE telling me that there is no other place on earth that she wants to see before Westminster, we will be planning a trip to London....hopefully sometime in 2012. Perhaps we can petition Tony or even Paul (assuming he is still alive) to conduct it. Afterall we did meet here. Edited April 30, 2011 by Pyro
