Woggle
I know I am going to get a lot of crap for this comment but I wish the royals knew how to do marriage as well they know how to do weddings. Maybe Will and Kate will break that cycle.

Maybe Will and Kate will break that cycle. Well, we out here in Commoner Land aren't doing any better at it, so I can't lay that on them. But I do hope Will and Kate make it. There's always hope in the next generation.
Star Gazer
Yes, the English are famous for their stoicism and attention to protocol. One of the things I admire about them actually. A split-second raising of the eyebrow carries a lot more weight over there than it does here in let-it-all-hang-out America. Their emotions are the same as ours, it's just expressed a lot more subtly. Subtly?? I read it as pretty much expressed...not at all. I hardly think that an expression of a tender moment of during a wedding between two people who are promising forever to one another is a "let-it-all-hang-out" negative thing. It was so impersonal. It could have been any two people up there, we wouldn't have known a difference.

pureinheart
Well, traditionally there are strong links between the monarchy and the armed forces. The armed forces here fight in the name of Queen and country. Most Royals will spend a period of time serving in some capacity in the armed forces - but they don't lead campaigns or make decisions about going to war. For me, it was a bitter-sweet feeling. In our modern, cynical times it is impossible to revive an institution like that once it's thrown away. Yet I feel certain that at some point in the next few decades, Britain will mock itself out of having a monarchy. I don't think we will gain anything meaningful as a result of throwing away such a defining and historic aspect of our culture. Thank you for answering that Taramere, I have never really understood how the Monarchy actually worked, so this is quite interesting and a wonderful education. (Bold) Even though I don't understand all of the inner workings of the Monarchy, there is still an understanding of the deep-rooted tradition. I think it would be a big mistake also. Should it happen in my time (which I pray that it doesnot), speaking on a personal level, it would feel like there is something very wrong with the world.
pureinheart
Hey...I couldn't stay up to see the Newly Weds and the famous balcony address.... Did they kiss??????? Oh OB is so agree with you, I felt the tension also, mainly from Prince Charles. Princess Di IMO caught him completely off guard and was not IMO again expecting the balcony kiss. Man, I was only 21 at that time and didn't understand the significance of that event...I just thought it was cool thing and thinking how beautiful Pricess Di was. I miss her. Eclypse
I don't know about the rest of you, but I made sure to join the "Pippa Middleton Ass Appreciation Society" on facebook as soon as it went up and voted for her to be "Queen of the Ass-tocracy" On a serious note, I like the way the old traditions are maintained by the Brits and their traditional stiff upper lip. There was a few too many hymns for my liking though, being a non religious person. Admittedly I probably wouldn't have watched the wedding if my girlfriend hadn't forced me to with her. There is however a gripe I have with it all. This wedding ceremony cost however many millions of dollars and cost the economy several billions to stop the city. Let's be entirely honest, there are a lot of people living in the U.K who aren't well off. We all remember the violent demonstrations last year over raising university fees to a crippling level. There were heaps of demonstrations this year too over services etc, such as the one where the 2012 Olympics countdown clock was damaged. As such it's always bothered me that the royalty lives such a lavish lifestyle and have enough to spend on flamboyant events like this while on the other side of the city people are living in poverty and struggling to pay debt and next weeks food bill. Although I'm not a resident of England, I'd be pretty pissed if my tax dollars were being used to fund something like this. Just my 2c. I do respect that William wants to earn his own salary as a pilot though. Respect right there, but wouldn't a simple wedding service as most people do have sufficed?
Citizen Erased
As the future King of England, a simple service would not have sufficed. Also, something like this is EXCELLENT for tourism. Bet the amount that the taxpayers handed over will be paid back easily with the people that want to see all the pretty things they watched on tv flocking to London. A small price to pay to market the country to 2 billion people. And I highly doubt anyone was bitching about getting a public holiday. If anyone loves an excuse to spend the day at a pub having some drinks, its the Poms.
TaraMaiden
....Unless it's a small business. They reckon it cost British industry a shedload of money to have two bank Holiday weekends consecutively. And I know our business was definitely down, to the tune of £5,000 off normal weekend figures.... This spelt disaster for those working... This really didn't help at all. What's more, our business is in serious danger of going under, and this hasn't helped at all. In fact, it's been a huge setback.... Yes I did Tara:)...my reply was not meant to offend you, my opinion is that in the long run many will prosper in the respect of regaining what was lost and then some. Will all? I'm not sure. Business is business...a business can be at the top of their game one day and bankrupt the next. Tara, I saw a great spiritual significance to this (the wedding) and for the life of me can't explain it nor put my finger on it. There was a great shifting of power in the spirit due to this wedding. We have something that some people don't have and that's faith. There is a reason for everything. I wish you and your business/employees many prosperous days to come. I don't want to get the wording wrong, so will just say it this way...God will take care of you and yours:)
