I had my sestamibi scan yesterday. The test in of itself is almost painless; I barely felt the needle and it wasn't so much an IV as it was the reverses of giving blood. The disturbing part was that the dye loaded needle was brought in encased in a heavy lead? tube that the technician carried with thick safety gloves. I know, I know she is exposed to the stuff all day long while I am only exposed once, but it doesn't make you want the stuff she shouldn't touch with her skin injected into your veins!

The machine is quiet at has no obnoxious lights. I was not stuffed in a tube that made me feel trapped. It was a big panel that they bring down very close to your face. The slab you lay on has been made to be as comfortable as they can but it still starts to get very uncomfortable on the spine after the first set of scans. You can listen to your ipod. I had made a play list of the Flobots and Lady Sov.

I had 4 sets of scans with about 10 minute breaks between them. I was allowed to see the images after a bit f bitching and assuring the tech I didn't believe I could diagnose myself. I was just curious and since it was my neck and I might not ever get to be around such a cool machine, I wanted to see what the images looked like.

I could clearly see my parathyroid glands so I do believe they got good scans. I could see my heart in a few of the scans too. Where I can completely see it takes a knowledgeable person to read the scans is that these glands are suppose to be very small but the imaging has a "glow" effect around the darker gland shape making them look, at first glance, to be much bigger than the grain of rice size they are suppose to be. What I saw was four glands all the same size but larger than I thought they would appear if they were normal. I left and called my doctor to let her know I'd had the scans. I was very stiff and sore from laying on the uncomfortable slab and holding very still. The dye made me feel nauseous but not enough to throw up. I swear I could taste the dye when I swallowed or inhaled through my nose, but that might have been my mind playing tricks.

She called me at 10:30pm last night to tell me that all four showed no adenomas and any of the 4 glands. I'm relieved because its not like I wanted there to be adenomas, but I'm worried because I still don't know WTF. She said I need to see an endocrinologist.

So high blood calcium, high pth (but not near as high as I've seen reported by others), palpitations, weight loss, calcium deposits one of which had to be removed surgically, but no adenomas? Is it possible this is just a normal state for me? I feel fit and well and all the personal stories I've found of people who did have hyperparathyroidism said they felt awful until they had surgery. I can't think of what else it could be.....

If I was feeling fine I just wouldn’t have gone to the doctor. I probably would have refused to be injected by that crap too.
