26pointblue
I'm in the process of moving to a new apartment. I think it'll feel good to start over in a new place where memories with xMM aren't everywhere [i'm even thinking of replacing my FURNITURE!] & where he doesn't know where I am. The problem . . . as I pack & clean, I've been listening to the MP3s on my iPod, & almost all of them make me think of xMM! I even want to start over with new music that is just for me, & has no connection to him or any point in our relationship. So what are your suggestions of good music to listen to? These could be empowering songs and/or getting over a break-up songs, or just any general recommendations . . . I hope to find some new favorites. I like pretty much anything [i would normally say, 'except country,' but because neither xMM nor I listened to country while we were together, it's new & fresh to me, so, bring it on!]
Snowflower
How about music from a genre that you have never really listened to before? You mentioned country...that might work if it is something new and different for your musical tastes. How about reggae, jazz, alternative rock, etc? Just any music genre that is new to you. I'm not sure how long ago your break-up was but maybe the latest hits in any genre will also help. You know, the ones that are too new to have been popular when you and xMM were together. myname
Not sure these'll be music you like, and some of them are kinda break up songs but I've found they make me feel a bit stronger, sometimes... maybe a bit sad or angry too though, but in a cathartic way. Second chance by The Lemonheads You cut up the clothes by Mrs Washington & Co Can't help you anymore by Sugar Hey ladies by Destiny's Child Trick Me by Kelis Don't let him waste your time by Jarvis Cocker I'm a lady by Santogold You can have him by Nina Simone Just go away by Blondie Broken broken heart by Jeffrey Lewis Enjoy packing, and moving on... Author 26pointblue
Thanks Snowflower. The break up was very recent & he was still trying to talk to me as of last week so it seems that any new song makes me think of him. Maybe just any song ha ha. Turntable- is that the song that goes like 'we could have had it aaaaaalllllllllllllllll...' ? That makes me think of him bc of the lyrics ha ha. I will check out the whole album though bc I like Adele. I have found that listening to 'angry chick music' or mellow chick music I guess, like Tori Amos & Ani DiFranco helps - they are old favorites n I've played them to death. Also changing or adding onto the lyrics in my head [like 'we could have had it aaa-llll . . . if you weren't full of craaaaa-aaaa-aaaa-p '] - yeah I'm still technically thinking of him but at least it feels more empowering than sitting around moping to love songs. I, and he & I, seemed to have listened to everything together- reggae, alternative, classic rock, pop, hip-hop . . . It seems like every song somehow reminded us of us ha ha. Not jazz- but to me jazz is so romantic or sad, ugh. Not country so I'll try that. And maybe just some new-to-me artists even if not new genres. I've actually started to listen to Irish-rock-ish [?] music like Dropkick Murphys & Flogging Molly. I think it's because we never listened to that, & b/c I'm of Irish heritage & he's not ha ha. Thanks for the suggestions & please keep them coming. :-)
Snowflower
You might find some country songs that you like but I find a lot of country music to be sad...many are about broken relationships, lost chances, etc. If you were my BFF and I was trying to give the same advice, I would tell you that. IMO, it's kind of like watching sappy, romantic movies or listening to love songs when you are going through a heartbreak, which you are. When my heart was broken, there was no way I could have listened to country music. But who knows, you might find country music comforting or a welcome distraction. I like the Irish-rock music that you mentioned.

I've been watching a LOT of them lately because my dog is recovering [hopefully?] From surgery & I have to do intense physical therapy stuff with her every day. I've been avoid sappy or funny romance movies. I've been going for inspirational ones - I really liked Conviction, & I also just watched Up In the Air which, while a romance of sorts, made me cry in a good way, realizing what is important in life [family]. I think I've gone through all the movies in Redbox that I dare to try in this mood, so I'm going to have to find a new source for movies.

I need a list of new/helpful songs like this to listen to on my runs as well. You rock, thanks! Well, hope you like them, I've got quite a list of songs I've made throughout my affair, so they're all maybe not so suitable, but also maybe are, some more so than others. I have some more... With every heartbeat by Robyn If I ever recover by Basement Jaxx Wide open road by The Triffids The Life and death of mr badmouth by PJ Harvey What man am I by Solomon Burke Changes by Gene Clark Been down so long by The Doors I ain't got nothing by The New York Dolls hope they don't get you down too much if you do listen to them though!! Author 26pointblue
Agreed!! Bulletproof by La Roux was my 'eff you' track!!!! I love that song but I used it during the brief time I was a 'happy' OW- in that I was accepting the affair for what it was & enjoying the benefits while knowing it wouldn't last & that I couldn't let him hurt me [of course, that last part never works out, but it was my mindset at the time & I do think that lioking at the situation realistically helped ease the eventual pain overall]. Like when she says 'I'm having fun' & 'tick tick tick tick on the watch . . . Oh baby, your time is running out'. It was very empowering for me to listen to & it still kind of is even though it is hugely connected to xMM in my mind [but in an 'eff you' way like you say].

Amour7
26, I added a couple songs to my running play list that are the bomb. Florence and the Machine "The Dog Days" (it starts a little slow, but it gets fast and the lyrics are fantastic for running and for breaking up-"Run fast for your mother... leave all your love and your long behind, you can't carry it with you if you want to survive"). The 2nd great one I have is "Forget You" by Cee Lo Green. Or get the explicit track and it's "F--k You." Whatever suits your fancy. Best of luck with your move!

datura_noir
I am totally shocked that no one has suggested "LIAR" by the Henry Rollins Band. It's very obscure, though... Edited May 16, 2011 by datura_noir

Seeker Sam
This may well be a 'down the track' song, as it does sing of the 'lost' one in a bittersweet kinda way. Some days I can listen to it.
