fish oil for good health?

Recommended Posts

hi guys! for as long as i can remember i've been sick a lot. aside from that since i was 18 yrs old i've been having problems with my body one by one! so far i have a congenital heart condition, hypertension, chronic migraine, severe dry eyes, and a vertebral artery pressing on a part of my brain.

i've always been the happy-go-lucky-live-your-life-as-if-it-were-your-last kind of person my entire life. so when my docs told me that i need to be on betablockers for my heart condition and hypertension, i didn't want to. they say it's for life. i asked for an alternative solution, one that doesnt require drugs and he said i could try omega 3 fish oil capsules. so far i'm taking maxa life omega 3 supplements.

has anyone taken fish oil for good health and to stabilize minor depression? i'm very new to this. need your thoughts! ;):bunny::love:

I'm sorry to hear that you've had to deal with chronic illness for such a long time.

Have the doctors determined the cause(s) of your symptoms?

While I'm not a medical expert, there is a large body of research and anecdotal evidence that supports the benefits of taking Omega-3 fish oil supplements. As far as I know, it couldn't hurt. Taking steps, even if they're small to improve your health via exercise and improved diet should also be a goal of yours, IMO.

Good luck!

Where I live, people take fish oil all the time for health purposes. When I grew up, I was fed a big table spoon of oil every day. It tasted really yucky  but now they come in tablet format as you said so it's easier. So, yes I do believe they are beneficial and with regard to battling depression I just think a healthy diet in general is extremely important.

I take Nordic Naturals fish oil. It's a brand you can find at many health food stores and places like Trader Joe's or Whole Foods. It's third party tested for metals which is something you need to watch out for when you buy fish oil supplements. I didn't have mood issues, but I've noticed some skin colored bumps on the back of my arms disappeared after I started taking the omega-3 Nordic Natural supplements plus my cholesterol (which was never bad) is really excellent now.

Consider also incorporating more fatty fish -- like salmon or sardines -- into your diet. Whole food > supplement.

Martin Berkhan dishin' out some mad knowledge on yo' butts about Omega 3 Fatty Acids: http://www.leangains.com/2011/05/omega-3-fatty-acids-for-muscle-growth.html

Cliff Notes: It's good for you.

Sold! Thanks, tman!

OP, women I work with swear by Omega 3 capsules. Their problems range from headaches, dry skin to chronic illnesses. Best of luck tackling your health problems.

Cerridwen, can you take Omega 3 if you're allergic to fish? I thought you were, home girl.

My old lady has some health problems with her heart and brain. I tried to get her to start taking heavy doses of Omega 3. She said that she lost too much weight and her tits shrunk. Silly superficial girl. She's rather feel like crap.

This doesn't sound right. There's nothing about fish oil to make someone lose weight and the added fat should support hormone production (making it unlikely that breast size would be affected). http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/12/24/us-fish-oil-idUSTRE6BN2BF20101224

Has she seen a doctor?

For a personal anecdote, I use fish oil every day in conjunction with saturated fats from whole food sources and some monounsats., and if I don't I seem to break out. Maybe it's a placebo-planted idea that I do breakout without the use, but whenever I do regularly consume fish oil, my skin practically glows.

Pretty much allergic to all seafood. I'll have to check with my doctor about this one.

Thanks, J.

Allergic reactions are caused by proteins. But who is to say there are not proteins in fish oil.

As far as my ex, I wouldn't be surprised if her decreased boob size wasn't just all in her head. She has issues. And she has seen the doctors, but no one can find anything wrong with her. She is on several medications for her heart and some other ****. I personally think it's a depression thing. That's why I suggested that she try omega-3. She's rather spend all her money on pharmies that haven't really worked so far.

I added sardines to my diet. They are rich in omega-3, minerals and other nutrients, and lack the mercury found in larger fish.

Brisling sardines from Norway are good, as well as some of the ones imported from Portugal.

We sometimes have fresh sardines available too where I live. They make a great pasta dish, often served in Rome and Sicily.

Also try to cut the bad fats and get more of the good fats, from fish, olive oil and avocados instead of red meat and dairy or hydrogenated fats from baked goods.

I'm not a believer in supplements, unless a lack of something is clearly indicated in the diet that can't be correct by changing food choices. We're meant to eat food, not pills and elixirs.

I think yes! Fish Oil plays an important role for those who've been taking it. I've never been tried to take a health supplement particularly focused on omega 3 fish oil But I'm aware about the brand like Nordic, Puritan, and the one popular and said to be the purest, Maxalife. I know omega 3 fish oil is good for the heart, lifts mood and nourishes brain.
