Well, my oldest brother has left for Iraq and he will be gone a year. I didn't even get to see him before he left but that's another thread.

Anyway, I have his snail mail address and I'm putting together a care package for him. I'm trying to think of things I can send that will hold up in handling and the heat that will give him some comfort.. I've asked him if there was something specifically he wanted and I will get those things but wanted to put in a few surprises as well..

So, here is what I've thought of so far:

beef jerky

dried fruit

nuts

sunscreen

And that's all I can think of.. Any other ideas? Does anyone else have a family member there and what did you send?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Could you send him a portable DVD player and new release movies? Or an Mp3 player with music he likes?

I don't know too much about sending things overseas, but my buddy in the Marines was always keen to know what was new in movies and music...

My stepson is leaving in six weeks, so I can sympathize with you. I've read a few sites about what is most common to put in care packages. Here are a few:

deodorant

toothpaste and toothbrush (evidently they run out of this stuff after a while and need new ones)

baby wipes

playing cards

stationary and envelopes for writing home

laminated pictures of yourself and/or other family members, pets, etc.

wrapped hard candy

disposable cameras (they can send them back to you after using)

I can certainly help you on this one....Georgia! I've been sending them for over a year.

Tobasco Sauce!!!!!!!! and LOTS of it to cover the MRE taste!!

Small- Med size paper back books....no romance novels. Helps boredom and to get to sleep.

Maxim Magazines. Obvious.

Baby wipes.....send a good supply in every package. The sand blows in tight places.

Canned Tobacco and rolling paper....if he smokes

Hard Candy. To block the sand taste and keep moiture in mouth.

Resealable baggies. To keep personal items in...to keep them from getting sandy.

I hope that helps! Don't forget to send him TONS or love and appreciation.

I think sending him something for his mind and soul would be the most important. Something personal to let him know that you and your family and friends love him and think about him everday. Maybe a collection of cards from everyone, photos, a favorite t-shirt, etc.

I wish him all the best :)

Cheers,

A.G.

DISPOSABLE CAMERAS!!!!!!!

The troops are having a hard time finding these over there. They want to use the cameras then send them back to the families so the families can develop them.
