somedude81
I often hear that advice for people that are depressed. But one problem that I am seriously having is that there are very few things that I enjoy doing or can do on a semi-regular basis. What I do the most to pass the time is play video games. Unfortunately my PlayStation 3 died recently and I don't have the cash to buy a new one. I have some other games that I play but for some reason they often make me very mad. So when I turn off a game because it makes me want to throw the controller, it doesn't exactly make me feel good. Another thing I enjoy doing is salsa and ballroom dance. The classes were lots of fun in college. Unfortunately going to clubs by myself absolutely sucks. There are just not enough women there so while doing a lesson, half the time I'm trying to learn the dance by myself, which simply doesn't work. During the social dance part there is still not enough women so I end up going home frustrated and feeling like I wasted my time. I tried to get into surfing but I found it extremely difficult. That's also another activity that's best with somebody(s) else. I'm also not a fan of getting up early to get the waves. The next thing is watching tv and killing time online. There are very few shows I like so for most of the day I'm sitting at my desk doing nothing. Every now and then I go on a bike ride for some exercise but what usually happens is that it's just me chatting in my head about how much I dislike my life. At least with TV and video games I don't have to think. At this point in my life I don't have any friends. I had some acquaintances during school and I looked forward to socializing with them. But nobody wants to hang out or they are too busy with work to do so. The most fun I had this summer was when I spent the day at the mall with a girl I really like. But it's been a week since then, and I have no idea when she'll let me hang out with her again. I'm going to call her in the evening and try to make plans with her this week. Hopefully she won't turn me down. Right now, I just feel that I don't have any reason to get out of bed. I'm usually awake around 7 and I'm mad because I have nothing to do. If I'm lucky I can go back to bed for a couple of hours. Since I'm not working, and it's hard to find a job, I'm on a very limited budget. Even if I had cash, I don't know what else I'd do. Most of the places I'd want to go to, are best with another person. Why is it so hard to have fun by myself?
tman666
I honestly cannot relate. TV and video games are a waste of time. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't enjoy them sparingly, but what do you accomplish with those activities? Nothing. You said you tried surfing but didn't catch on. Guess what? Most things goals in life worth pursuing take a lot of work, trial and error, and drive. If surfing were easy, do you think it would be as impressive to other people when someone says "yeah, I'm a surfer". This applies to everything in life. I can go ahead and order myself a black belt and wear it around, but does that make me a skilled martial arts practitioner? I can spend a bunch of money on muscle implants (yes, they exist), but does that make me strong? I can cheat and fake my way through a degree, but does that make me qualified or educated? Everyone looks for the short cuts in life. So many people want things to be given to them without "paying their dues". There are children dying of leukemia who will never get the option to go surfing. There's young men and women our age who will never be themselves again after fighting in military conflicts. More commonly, there are many of us (which I'm guessing you'll be one of them someday) who give the majority of our waking hours to someone else in the form of "traditional" employment. Put on your god damned big boy pants, get off the computer, and go accomplish something. Your whining will get you nowhere.
