I will be taking my first spin class with a friend on Sunday morning. I was wondering for the people who know, what are the bennifits you get from it? Does it leave you energized all day, what does it help to do for your body other then build endurance?

Wear a couple of extra spandex shorts, or invest in the special padded shorts.

Spinning can be a pain in the ass.

Hope this reaches you in time.

WEll, today was a good day with the spin class. It was hard work, but I managed to bust my butt and sat when needed and tried to keep up. It is something I would do again because it gave me an energy boost that lasted all day. I still feel like I am on fire from the experience.

I've been doing spinning classes for about 7 months now. I usually go twice a week. I have found alot more muscle definition, weight loss, improved fitness and my thighs are alot more toned. I'm hooked!

EMERALD: I have gone once and feel like I could definitly do it again. Hopefully I get hooked but anyways it is good to hear that you have done it so long and seen excellent results. Good for you. I plan on doing it once a week and seeing if I could see any definition in my legs and body and how toned I get.

Thanks everyone fro helping me out. SARAH

It's a bicycling class...the seat is hard as hell, though. I didn't care for it for that reason alone. The way I see it, is if there is that kind of discomfort in it where there doesn't have to be, why bother? My a$$ wasn't sore from working out, it was sore from the hardness of the seat. It's an intense work out, so that's a plus. I prefer to ride a REAL bike...it's pretty hilly where I live, so I get quite a work out.

Let me get this straight. You guys PAID to take a class on how to ride a bike that doesn't GO anywhere???????

Spin class is where you ride a stationary bike that has a way too small of a seat and you feddle fast, and change speeds on your bike for either highter or lower resistance, and you sometimes sit while peddaling, or you don't sit. It varies. I was told your burn close to 700 calories. Not sure if that is true, but it will kick you ass as far as toning your muscles. Very worth while to look into and do sometime.

I just pay for going to the gym every month, so yeah I guess you can say that is one of the things I pay for. It is not that bad though. I agree though with Fedup, that the seat alone would make things very uncomfortable. But, it is very high tense and really will whip your bod into shape.

The spinning classes were included in my gym membership, but I find that I use them more than anything else the gym has to offer. The best part about doing class exercise is that is motivates you to perform better than you would otherwise. I am constantly pushing myself to keep up with others in the class. There is no way I would go to those extremes during a leisurely bike ride through the suburbs. If you aren't coated in sweat by the end of a session, there you haven't worked properly. It helps that the fitness instructer running the classes is a bit of a nazi and FORCES you to do the work. All I can say is that if you aren't willing to put in the effort then spinning classes are not for you. But as a failure-proof way of improving fitness then they truly are the best workout you could do.

pregnant lurker

I took these classes about two years ago and was totally lean and mean during the duration. I only quit because my gym closed, and I sincerely regret that I did not get back into it. I really saw results - I did it two or three times a week, once or twice for 45 minutes and once for 1.5 hours (that was a killer!!). I dropped clothing sizes. That was all I did for my workout. I hate lifting waits and jogging, so it was perfect for me.

Note: It did not hurt that my instructor was a Scandinavian dream babe. He used to get off his bike and come around and talk to each one of us to push us...it was my favorite part of the class.

Anyway, I keep trying to get my husband to go. Since I'm pregnant, he's put on almost as much weight as me. I don't know if he could handle it though - it's really intense, and I think you have to be sort of competitive to enjoy it. I took along a girlfriend once, and she tried it for about ten minutes and then just left. She hated it.

I must definitely remember to get back into it after the baby is born.

Hey guys. Am I the only person in the world that hates spin?? When the craze hit I tried to get into it, but it's just so boring and repetitive and uncomfortable. I didn't notice any change in my physique (although I did push myself), except that my thighs seemed a little more muscular. And that's not what I wanted!

I used to go to a spin class weekly but decided to stop punishing myself and now I run on the treadmill for 30 minutes instead. It's so much better! It's something I look forward to rather than dread. I guess it's important to find a type of exercise that you like.

I just never liked doing any form of group exercise, even combat which is kinda fun. Group exercise is good in that you get pushed to keep up, but I find I get much more out of my gym time when I can work out MY way.
