Does Southern Accent Turn You Off?

See. Brits do know as little about us as we do about them. Cowboys are in the mid-West mostly. That's a different accent from a Southern one. There are no cowboys in the South.

Mid-west America is mostly centered around the western Great Lakes, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, in that area. I usually think of cowboys as being more western and from Montana to Texas. It's interesting that you perceive cowboys being Mid-westerners. Maybe my perception comes from watching Western movies as a kid.

I don't find that the people Upstate have an accent. Originally Posted by SmileFace

That nasal accent just seems to grind on me.

I'm amazed at how many dialects or accents there are in the UK or British Islands. No offence but that area is about the size of Wisconsin. I realize there's nearly 70 million people there but is seems like each town or village has it's own dialect. I didn't really notice it as much until Jeremy Clarkson, the equal opportunity offender, began to point it out regularly.

Everyone has an accent :)

Yes, obviously but since it is so close to my own. I can't really identify it.

Everyone has a dialect but the Hollywood dialect seems the most accent-less. I wonder if those foreign to English would find it as bland and boring as many English speakers seem to.

I've also noticed people living in urban areas generally seem to have less pronounced accents than people who live in rural areas. People who live in larger southern cities like Charlotte or Atlanta seem to have much more subtle accents. I'm sure the large migration from other areas to those cities has largely influenced that as well.

I think it was suppose to be a mix of Long Island and New York Jewish but the nasally part could of been more particular to her which she was exaggerating for comedic effect. She's quite a pretty woman anyway even in her later years.

I'm sure she's a wonderful woman. When she laughs I find myself griminessing & grinning at the same time however, LOL

I had to google Sawyer.

To me he sounds rednecky. LOL

I don't know what the lived marker for redneck is, lol. I just think, 'out of control Christian' or white, racist, uneducated American poor person. No, he plays a commoner in 'LOST', quite the bad boy, who later melts into an affectionate person. Throughout his transition to managing a rather entrenched vulnerability, he remains severely HOT - like the highest dimension of hotness.

I think the accent was a put on for the role though. Bloody made it all come together in my view.

Highly succulent man.

*Eve imagines Sawyer with a British Accent and shudders at how perfect that would in fact be*

H'mmmm..

Take care,

Eve x

I see there is a comma between white & racist. Does that mean that to be a redneck you must be all of these things collectively or individually. Because I know; 'out of control Christian' or black, racist, uneducated American poor person and I know; 'out of control Christian' or white, uneducated American poor persons who are not racists. In fact i know a; white, racist, uneducated Canadian poor person. Would she be a red neck. I was just wondering if I could be a red neck even if I'm not out of control, or a racist, I am an American but Oooo, I have 1 major & 2 minor college degrees, but I don't think I'm rich, so I guess I'm not a red neck huh? Just screwin' with ya.:D

Dunno, lol. I really have no idea. Though, I don't think equality issues stretch very far within redneck etiquette. If there was to be some sort of 'redneck genocide' in the future, most of the above would be included methinks.

.. but lets stay on topic. Sorry for my distraction.

Fair enough. Thank you for taking it with the humor that was intended, After just re-reading it I relize you could have taken it differently:)

Redneck is a term that is a product of Southern classism. It refers to a white Southerner so poor he needed to work his own fields or resort to field work for a livelihood resulting in a sunburned neck, i.e. a red neck. Quite an unoriginal term.
Reading your definition of a redneck while seeing your avatar is hilarious:laugh:...

That's what I always used to picture when I heard the term redneck. Right up until a fella in Fort Worth told me a redneck is someone you can circumcise by kicking his mother in the jaw.

LOL, I can think of a few areas in the UK where the same test can be used. LOL, for the greater part we just call them chavs.

I think every civilisation has such a group of people, lurking around fields or chip shops. Baffling thing is, some are really nice!

If you say so. Which part are you from?

Steeee-RIKE one...

I lived in the South much of my life having moved from NY. But I never warmed to southern accents so yes, they are a turn off.

Heathen Northeners, can't even understand the Queens very own.

Nelson Mandela, Ruby Murray, Gregory Peck, Thrupenny bits.

Putting a few pints of stella and a curry down your neck will put hairs on your chest. The southern elixir of life.

I've often had fantasies about getting all rough and nasty with a guy with a heavy southern accent and saying lots of dirty things in that accent while doing the dirty deed :bunny:

LOL, heathen , eh?

We call Stellar, wife beater where I live. That is one madly strong lager. Its like drinking two lagers simultaneously.

Can't argue with having a lovely curry. We can share that one.

Isn't it funny how we live probably nowhere near the distance as some of the people here and the culture can be so different!?

Of course, we do have the advantage of being more civilised in the north.. Queenie is a Northern lass at heart. She just has to live in London because it is expected of her. She is barely there, I hear. :p

Yes, she likes to travel north through hunting season, Phillip shoots while she points an laughs. It's been easier for them since Maggie closed the pits, you can't scurry back down your burrows now.

Not sure if the cultures are all that different as you travel across our country, the language changes a little, and the accents change a lot, but I think it's the classes that still differ the most. Lot of Yaya's and Rara's down here, they live in their own little pockets of snobbery and glare down their snoots at all others. Might make the south seem different at first glance, but really, most of us are no different to all you's up north.

Sooo, there is a similar rivalry between the north & south in England as their is between the south east U.S. and... well every where else? :)

There are very specific southern US accents that are sexy on a woman, most are not. Today I heard a guy from Alabama call CSPAN and my head hurt from listening to him.

"Den da deficit uhhhhhhh it's all too much ya'll" it just sounds so, dumb for lack of a better word.

Yes, we've talked about that a little earlier. There are more Southern, (U.S.) dialects than you can shake a stick at. When I first moved to the south I could barely understand some them. Now I can tell you what part of what state in the south & even what mood their in just by their accent & dialect. I do know their is no way someone that doesn't have a natural southern accent can fake one much beyond a few words no matter how good they THINK they are.

My favorite is the slow, softer & proper dialect. The sort of, "Gone with the Wind" southern most common near Savannah, GA. I have to admit there is a certain carefree appeal to the North Carolina accent which is similar to Reba McEntire's when she's not, "laying it on". And then there are some that just sound stupid but you will find that anywhere you go in the U.S. or abroad. Stupid is universal.
