Lilmisus
Tonight, I was out playing pool with a girl friend of mine, and the bar was pretty empty when we got there. There's this pool table that we always try to get (right by the door) and when we saw that it was actually empty this time, we went for it. A couple tables down from where we were at, two guys were sitting there eating their food. The one facing us nudges his friend, and they both start checking us out, but we ignored it. They then got up, and just stood there watching us play and whatnot, and we were just ignoring them. Then, one of them (obviously drunk) asked us "excuse me, did you steal my two balls?" while grinning like a fool, but we both played dumb at first and just looked at him like "What the hell are you talking about?" He then went on to say "I was just kidding..hahahaha..want to play doubles?" And then I gave him some bs excuse as to why we couldn't, saying that I was teaching my friend how to play and I didn't want her playing against others just yet. He bought it, but told me that I could teach him how to play sometime too, and I was just like "yeah..I don't think so, bye." It just blows my mind that some guys actually resort to something as low and lame as a line like the one he used. I mean..I wasn't dressed in high class attire, but at the same time, neither of us look (or are) easy. Especially not that easy to where we'd go along with that. So tell me: why do guys do that? Do any girls actually laugh or go with a guy who says anything remotely close that what he said? I knew that they were both seriously trying to get with us, so I know that he was honestly trying a line he thought might actually work, but would it ever?
Sweetheartt
Nope not me. I think some guys do that because they dont know what to say when they really wanna just ask u out and stuff. I get lame pickups sometimes but I also get alot of creepy stares. Idk guess guys can be just weird.
Ginger Beer
I've got a friend who does this all the time and it's ****ing awkward to watch. He thinks girls love to hear it.

God, your friend is insane. I'm sorry, but I hate hearing things like that..at least from total strangers. If I'm dating the dude..maybe. If it's a friend, sure, why not? But strangers..yeah, no. Trust me, it's even more awkward to be the one who the line is directed to. Especially when they just stand there expecting something to come from it.
Nexus One
Why do guys use HORRIBLE pickup lines? Do you mean to say you expected anything else from guys that hang out at bars with pool tables? Mind you, they don't represent the entire male population in the world.

I've gone to the freakin' pharmacy store a couple times and have gotten bad pick up lines there too For the past however long, guys have just been feeding me horrible lines (like every woman out there), but this one just takes the cake. Which..though it probably wont make a difference, her and I were there at like 6:30, just playing pool. It wasn't like we were there at midnight, showing all our cleavage and trying to get wasted. Not sure what to tell you, why do men do it? I think in your case they were joking around, as they were laughing. I sense they damn well knew that a line like "did you steal my balls" would get them nowhere. There's no school that teaches men how to pick up women, basically we get dropped on this spherical rock that floats through space not knowing what the f*ck we're doing. Here again is someting akin to the difference between telling a lie in a real news publication and telling a very far-fetched lie in the National Enquirer. Because that line was sooooooooooooooooooo unlikely to have any prayer of 'picking you up', he should not be critiqued for having used it as a pick-up line. If somebody in the news says your father is having an affair with the neighbor woman two doors down, and it isn't true, your father can sue for a variety of reasons. IF, however, the National Enquirer comes out and claims that Alan Thicke is having an affair with a martian woman, he has no case against the Enquirer, because the story is not believable. So, while you can grumble all you want about guys making crude statements to you (as if merely with their buddies on a guys-only fishing trip)... it isn't right to associate what he said with an actual pick-up line. But come on now..no girl in her right mind would even consider a guy who's first line said to her involves the word "balls" No matter if it's supposed to be taken lightheartedly or not. I'm just glad that Mr. Cute Guy, who I'm going out with Thursday actually showed a little bit of class when hitting on me the other day. May show that he's more used to it and knows what works and what doesn't with girls..but hey..it gives me more hope for the male population, I must say.

Right. So that's why he tried to play doubles, and kept trying to talk to us and check us out after? (Every time I so much as glanced over at them, they were watching us) Because he wasn't really trying to pick us up..he was just talking to talk? Trust me..it may have just been the dumb drunk in him speaking when he said it, but..he was definitely trying to get lucky tonight, it was plain to see. Maybe he just said it to break the ice? I dunno..but regardless, it was ridiculous.
Enchanted Girl
I don't judge men based on their pick-up lines because to approach a woman at all is hard and the same thing won't work on every woman. If you just say hi, you can seem boring. If you compliment her or talk about sex, you can seem sleazy. If you make a joke, she may not think its funny. So on and so forth. What I judge them on is all the other stuff. Do they give me good vibes? Do they dress like a sleazy man? What does their body language project to me? What were they and their friends behaving like before they approached? What kind of men do these guys appear to be? Because, yes, this line could actually work on me if I felt like all the other stuff turned out well. I've dated several men who's beginnings with me were awkwardly delivered because they seemed overall genuine and nice from everything else I'd taken in about them. A guy can be stupid with pickup lines, but an excellent boyfriend and there's a lot of guys out there who are good at getting the girls but ******* boyfriends. The only kind of line that makes me reject a man automatically is an insult. Which yes, I've actually been given those. Where a guy walks up to me, says something is wrong with me, and then asks me out. It blows up in their faces.
iris219
I think men do this because many are childlike, regardless of age, and they genuinely think they're being funny. It's impulsive. I don't think they think about the likelihood of a dumb line working. They just do it. Often, I like to be just as ridiculous as them. So the line "did you steal my two balls?" could have been met with "I don't know. Are they blue?"

tb24
A question for the girls then: Take the initial scenario. A guy sees a girl he's interested in playing pool with her friend. What should the guy do to initiate a conversation?

oaks
why do guys do that? Do any girls actually laugh or go with a guy who says anything remotely close that what he said? I don't think I do this myself, but I suspect the short answer is because sometimes it works and it's a less boring opener than "hi, my name is Oaks. What's yours?" You should at least have played along to hear if there was a punchline to the joke.
