Recommended Posts

 i've been on birth control for about a month now....and i've most definitely gained weight. the doc said that weight gain was a common side effect.

i haven't been eating more than usual, or exercising any less.

anyone else have this problem?

Hi!! Gaining weight when taking the pill is definetly a normal factor for most women. Since you have only been taking them for a month your body is having to adjust to it. More than likely after your body has gotten use to it you will probably start dropping the weight you've gained with reg exercise and healty eating habits. If you start to have other problems and side effects advise your doctor, he may need to change your prescription. Hope this help!!

I gained a big amount of weigh some 7 years ago when I was taking a pill that had very high hormones dosage. (I didn't need to prevent getting pregnant at the time but I had to be on the pill for a year because it helped me to cure amenorrhea). but I can't honestly tell if it was a side effect of taking the pill or I was just eating a lot :o

A couple of friends of mine have the same problem, one stopped gaining weigh when she changed pills. Looks like the higher the hormone dosage, the bigger the odds of gaining weigh.

Now I'm on low hormone dosage pill, and I didn't gain a single pound (except than in the first couple of weeks).

Perhaps trying to change pills might help. You could discuss it with your gynecologist.

But consider thet the weigh-gaining might be only temporary, it is to be expected in the first couple of months. See if the situation improves in a while.

:o some 10 kilos in 4 months.... :o it is *quite* a lot :( I was on a pill called "Milvane".(I think it's called "triminulet"in other countries, but I'm not too sure.)

Now I'm on a pill called "Arianna", which has the lowest estrogen dosage. (I think it is similar to a pill called "Minesse")

Weight gain is the most commonly listed side effect. Oddly enough, when I was on the pill I didn't gain a damn thing! I definitely could have used an extra 10 ponds or so! :(

She said kilos as in kilograms, you know, one kilo that actually has a 1000 grams... 10! Not 2, or 3 as I definetely will gain if I continue to eat chocolate like right now - pms, girls.... You don't need 10 kilos, believe me. No one I know does!

Actually, Curly, I am about 10-12 pounds underweight. Naturally high metabolism here - they said this would slow down some after I turn 50.

If only I had a sweet tooth, chocolate probably would solve that! But I don't, so I'll just have to keep putting my faith in beer, I guess. ;)

I couldn't stop taking it..... :( well, I got amenorrhea as a consequence of a drastic weight loss. I ended weighing 44 kg (I'm 1.63 m tall) after a stupid diet... and my period stopped. I got back to 50 kg (I finally listened to my parents and to the doctor) but still my period would not come back... I did some blood testings and they showed that my hormones were all f*cked up, I had to go on the pill (one with a high hormone dosage) for a year to fix them up....I was lucky because I got my period back, I actually risked becoming sterile. unfortunately with the pill my weight jumped from 50 kg to 60 kg in 6 months....pity I couldn't stop taking it :(

Now luckily -after a few years- I am again around 50 kg, something I'm proud of, it was hard getting back to my normal weigh. :)

I suggest you start the pill, it's so very useful! My PMS has not improved a lot, but my belly aches a lot less since I went on birth control. Minnette has low hormone dosage so it shouldn't affect your weight a lot - I hope not, anyway :)

I promise I'll stop with the metric system now :)

Sorry to have been so harsh. When in high school I decided to became a vegetarian and I ate the most incredible vegetables for like one year and... screwed my stomach. So my mom took me to the doctor one day and as a result I got "stuffed" with vitamins, calcium, magnsium and lots of other medicines, being forced to take all at the same time. I also gained like 8 kilograms in no time and I needed years to finally get back to my normal weight. It freaked me out! I struggled and struggeled to get rid of them and in the end I did.

The funny thing is my mom is a doc, I went on prescription from a doc, so after the experience I reject everything closely related to docs

The worst thing for me in high school was the fact that I am rather tall, but I did do a lot of sport so I am no skinny looking girl. But my sister is!!! I love her to death but I'll never have her figure. And she can eat tones of fries, chocolate and icecream and keep it that way.

This is why I got so worried, because I would never let it go out of control - my weight that is. I did gain some stretch marks over that, but I'm rather good at hiding them, so in the end it tuned out ok. It was quite a big deal for me at the time, hence the tone of my response

About the metric system: I just looked on the internet and I found http://www.onlineconversion.com/

so I'm ok with either of the two.

So I hate the idea of taking any chemicals, I don't even take pain killers unless I am really really sick. I also feel guilty for wanting to break my "rule" :o for a guy, but what can I do, I'm crazy about him, although I know he doesn't worth the effort. I am thinking about this as "enjoying it while it lasts", as me and my friends refer to it!

thank you all for your replies :)

and to Curly: i am on Ortho Tricicline-Lo, which is supposed to be a low dosage of hormones, and i have been on it for about a month now. i'll be starting the 2nd pack in a couple days.

i've gained about, eh...4-5 lbs maybe, if that. i'm not even sure to be honest with you.

perhaps i should simply exercise more :o
