What should I say when....

I recently lost my mother (last week). She died from breast cancer. It's too soon for me to even think about getting over this. But I'm trying to move on with my life. I returned to work a few days ago after having been off for a week to greive. Everyone in my office has been approaching me with hugs and tears telling me how sorry they are for my loss.

These people didn't even know my mother. They only know me. While I understand and appreciate the sympathy, I don't know how to respond. What am I supposed to say when someone says, "I'm so sorry about your loss?"

Should I say "thank you?" Remember I'm still grieving here. I'm trying to move on. But when I have people walking up to me, sometimes strangers who heard the news from someone else, I'm constantly being reminded of it. Actually, I feel better when I'm at home with family or alone when I don't have people FEELING SORRY for me all day. What should I do? I don't want to be rude. I just want to move on.
