truenigma
...my skin looks so much better. I don't consider myself an alcoholic, but sometimes just drinking 3 drinks would make my face flush and turn beet red. I have very fair skin to begin with, so the redness was very noticeable. Even the next morning, the redness would stay throughout most of the day. Now after five alcohol free days, my skin looks great, and the shade looks healthy again. I like this. So its vanity I suppose, but I'll keep the change. Kind of funny that my quitting smoking thread is right below. Who the hell do I think I am anyway? betterdeal
That reddening is a sign of stress on the body; usually the liver.
Author truenigma
Yeah, could be. It was mostly when I would drink red wine. I'm going to have some labs done soon.

BrainRightHeartWrong
yeah, I nearly killed myself drinking (3 bottles red wine every night for 3 years no nights off) I must have damaged liver... I probably should not drink at all but if i do say drink 2 nights with 5-6 pints of beer my face is beetroot Everyone says I am an alcoholic and I definitely was but I could now drink for 2 nights and completely stop albeit a red face... which... I'd like to know the medicinal reason why as this never happened before my previous SERIOUS abuse of alcohol
Art_Critic
truenigma.. congrats, nothing wrong with putting it down.. good for you Alcohol use and abuse affects many organs in the body. On the skin, alcohol causes dilation of surface capillaries (tiny blood vessels), resulting in facial flushing and a pinkish-red hue to the cheeks. With chronic use of alcohol, the face and nose will sustain flushing and appear red. Please see Alcoholism for further details This was taken from a medical page but there is also an interesting article from webMD on a subject like this... http://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/news/20040218/link-between-rosacea-alcohol

When stressed, they dilate and fill up with blood making you red faced. Try not drinking at all for 3 months. Then drink moderately after that.

It clears up really quickly... within days with no booze Other things cause it too like I love chilli peppers and really hot food too much but that causes my skin to be blotchy red Maybe genetics also being an Irishman although it was really clear 10 years ago, I used to get more sunlight back then which I think helped a lot
betterdeal
It's called Rosacea and is known as the "curse of the Celts". My skin was clear about 15 years ago and has progressively got redder since. Typical irritants are heat, cold, caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, yeast and stress. A good skin cleansing regime, eating healthy, managing your weight, getting any physical ailments seen to, removing stress and using a good sun block or a hat help. IPL is a treatment option.
