Dblock10
Hello peeps, this may be a bit random but I am giving very serious thought about getting my teeth done (braces) to get them all perfect as they can be! i think a nice smile is a very attractive feature for a person to have and I myself have always wanted that "american smile". I tend to avoid smiling showing teeth in photos and I am sick of it! ok they aren't really bad or anything but I feel if they were straight and i had a wider smile and correct jaw bite that my confidence would be boosted. I would enjoy smiling, and would just become more happy! id wake up with a smile on my face! I am currently 24 (just)! and basically I am wanting to just go for it, I think the orthodontist said it would take about a year to correct them. I am male btw. when i was 14 I had braces but they did the old method which was to remove crowded teeth and then pull the rest in to create a straighter image of the teeth. however this causes a narrow smile and dosnt look all that great. so I have to pay about £200 for a model of my teeth to be sent to the USA and then they can tell me if its worth going ahead basically or if its even dooable. my only fear is how the braces will look. and I am still at university.. but deep down i know if i never do it now then i may never do it. or do I wait until after university? help and advice or thoughts on this, anyone been through the same i.e getting braces as an adult and what it was like thank you Edited July 10, 2011 by Dblock10

I think it's worth it. He spent the last year of high school with braces on his teeth, and he still had girls interested in him and flirting with him. No need to wait. Afishwithabike
Get the braces. I had braces when I was twelve years old because I had a terrible overbite from sucking my thumb as a child. The braces were a godsend. I have straight teeth now. I don't know how it is where you live, but in America they have braces now that aren't obvious. Some orthodontists even place the braces behind the teeth if the patient doesn't want the obvious appearance of braces on the teeth.
amethyste
Go for it! I don't think you should be concerned about how they'll look. My dentist showed me some invisible braces, and some that can be placed on the back of your teeth (so nobody will see them). It'll last only one year, and then you'll have perfect teeth for life. One year vs. fo' life seems a very good deal. My mom got braces when she was 50 yr old (around 3 years ago), and now she's perfectly fine.
Author Dblock10
awesome i am going to call them tomorrow! yeah I think it would improve the look of my face massively and i will never have to worry about a dodgy camera angle again. i spoke to the dentist about the invisible ones etc but the cheapest best method is going to be on the front of the teeth. once all work is complete and bite and teeth corrected you wear a retainer for 24 months, it sits behind the teeth. once that gets removed they shall stay that way hopefully! what about wisdom teeth though? would they not cause any issues? i shall ask these questions when i phone. also i hope instalments can be arranged as i don't have $5500
Dorie
Don't put it off. There is absolutely no time like the present! I personally think braces look adorable. They're temporary but the boost to one's confidence is long lasting. I hated my teeth and wanted that 'American smile' as well. 10 months hence, I had it. I was 22 when my teeth were corrected. In retrospect, the time I had with braces flew by. I believe it will for you too.
Author Dblock10
thanks so much! seems like a great opportunity not to miss out on. and the end result when they get taken off. wow, must be sooo worth it :D :D im so worried what people will think though and i dont know why. its like you have to loose confidence short term to then get massive confidence long term. that in itself wants me to do it though when i look at it this way. how did you cope having it at an older age dorie 10 months? thats how long you had it in? hmm the money is putting me off now. total just for the top teeth would cost like £4000 english pounds .... Dorie
Yes, I was able to fully correct in 10 months. I wasn't put off by the look so what others thought wasn't of concern to me. I loathed my crooked teeth more than any worry about temporary image. I did want to qualify my statement of "get it done" by asking if this will cause you great monetary pain. One must be realistic about what one can afford!
Teknoe
I'm coming up on the end of my 2 year stint with Invisalign. I'm satisfied, my smile now looks 100x better than it did 2 years ago.
FinOuch
Get the braces done. The self-consciousness will not go away. I'm 31 and I'm still wrestling with this issue. My teeth aren't that bad, but they still bother me and I would love to have that "perfect" smile. I've finally come to the following conclusion: I'm wary of braces because I will be self-conscious of them. BUT, I'm self-conscious of my teeth anyways. So with that being said, a year of self-consciousness over braces is a small price to pay to put to rest a lifetime of self-consciousness of not-perfect teeth. And Teknoe brings up a great point with Invisalign. It may be worth looking into.
