oldguy
Cute. I will consider and elaborate. I don't particularly like or dislike BMI, but I think it can be a useful tool. Like all tools, much of its effectiveness is in the skill of the person using it. Personally, I find the mirror is the best gauge of appearance. :laugh:I was actually agreeing with you

Late 30's 5'9" 125-130 lbs Size 2-8 depending on brand and degree of vanity sizing (!) I currently weigh a bit less than I did in high school - I think I'm in better shape generally than I was even back then. At my heaviest, I weighed 167 in college and for a few years after. It never felt good to carry the extra pounds around; I'm happy to have overcome a near eating disorder and to have become a much more active person in the last 6-7 years. I have a small frame, too, though so I can understand how you can weigh less than what's recommended on a chart and not look anorexic. I am 105 right now and while the number looks good, my ideal range would be more like 97-102 pounds. I choose not to pack on a lot of muscle either but work with my natural muscle tone, so that also leaves room for a lower number range. I'm the same height as you and weigh about 15 lbs. more. Some people think I'm too thin. I lost weight after a break-up once and got down to 110. At that weight, I stopped getting my period and started having other medical problems.

Star Gazer
I really do think it has a lot to do with your frame size and how much muscle you naturally have. When I was in college, I once got down to 113. I'm 5'4" and based on numbers alone you'd think that'd be fine/good. Well, I had several people during that time ask me if I was sick, or if everything was okay in my life and asked if I was even eating. I wasn't told that I looked good/healthy until I was in the low 130's.

That's because Americans (most of whom are overweight by definition) accuse anyone who has a normal body type of being "sickly-looking" in an effort to rationalize their own fatness. They'd point out a Victoria's Secret model and say that she looks like a bag of bones. If you lived in Europe or even Canada, you'd never be accused of looking unhealthy at 5'4, 113. They'd point out a Victoria's Secret model and say that she looks like a bag of bones. If you lived in Europe or even Canada, you'd never be accused of looking unhealthy at 5'4, 113. Yes she would. I'm in Europe, I'm the same height as Star and am medium boned. The lowest I've been over the past few years is 120 pounds when I was experiencing a lot of work related stress. At that weight, my doctor expressed concerns about whether I was eating enough as in his view I looked too thin. Right now I'm 134 pounds, a lot healthier than I was back then..and most compliments I get focus around me being slim. There are some women of 5 ft 4" who will look healthy enough at 112 pounds because they're small boned, not carrying much muscle and only a few pounds underweight for their height....but for a medium boned woman of that height who is physically active, 112 is going to be underweight. Here is a height weight chart. http://www.caloriecounting.co.uk/resources/charts/ideal.htm Charts like that take into account differences in bone size and density as well as muscle tone. It may well be that you think you know women who are healthily slim and weigh 113 pounds at 5 ft 4". Chances are unless they're very small boned they're fibbing about their weight. Or the alternative might be that your notions of what is healthy differ from medical professionals' opinions.

Taramere
What i do not understand is why is the UK the second fattest country in the world? No one EVER says; 'lets go out for British food' JK... sort of:laugh: I honestly think it has got a lot worse since the opening of lots and lots of McDonalds and other fast food places. I'm old enough to remember when the first McDonalds opened in my town. These places always seem to contain people who are eating...at all kinds of hours. Plus there has been a burgeoning of supermarkets. The population in my town hasn't expanded sufficiently to justify the increase in all these food outlets. The only explanation I can think of is that there are people eating 3 or 4 times the amount that they used to eat. Ironically, our ideal in the UK tends to be of the waif-like figure (as in Kate Moss) rather than a more healthy looking type. I watched this show called "Britain's Next Top Model" last year...and the girl the judges really liked was evidently very underweight. As a contrast, I watched the Australian version of the show....and the difference in attitudes was astounding. The emphasis was on health rather than on getting these girls into a pin thin shape. Yet I'm pretty sure that there is far less of a weight problem in Australia. I think that in a culture where an underweight look is prized, the ironic consequence is that there will end up being more women who are seriously overweight. Once people get into the business of eating disorders, that's what tends to happen. Food obsessions develop. Some will develop anorexia, others will binge and purge....others still will simply binge. Well, the people commenting at the time were women who were the same size or smaller than I was. It's just that being that thin didn't look good on me. One BF even said, after we broke up, that he had lost attraction for me because I was so skinny. I found a box of old clothes at my mom's house about a year ago, and couldn't believe how small my clothes were. It kinda freaked me out, and I realized they had all been justified in being concerned. I mean, look at the last picture where I was around 148, and then take off 35 pounds. I'd look deathly thin!!! I don't really see the UK as "Europe" but I guess I should have been specific that I was talking about the continent. The Brits are the second fattest nation on earth (after the Americans, of course) and you can't really compare them with other Europeans. 5'4/113 are perfectly normal stats for a woman who has good genes and leads a healthy lifestyle.
