How to stop getting angry over non-spelling non-punctuating posters?

Recommended Posts

There has been a RASH of people posting on this board that spell as if they havent passed the third grade, or dont think that punctuation is essential to reading a post. I have been able to really let alot of things slide in life, and this is starting to get to me, as stupid as it is. Now the real solution is to ignore those posters or maybe take a break from the board, because being evil to people that have writing issues probably wont help them.

I also tried to make sure that I was the first one to post "This is too difficult to read, please repost with punctuation" just to see if they would do it, but of course people post emotionally, and they only care about hearing what they want to hear, they dont care about how hard it is for people to read it, so they never repost.

im not gonna get mad over it, maybe im being pompous when on the inside im begging for spelling and punctuation. Especially when its not that many posters. As much as i'd like to ignore it, people do respond to the posts, and by then ive already seen it. As much as id like everyone to ignore blocks of posts that have no punctuation making them hard to read, the purpose of the board is to help people, not critique them while theyre hurt.

Can we fix this?

Do I just have to eat it?

Am I alone here?

LOL! Nah you can just re-post since your punctuation and the grammar are flawed. Thanks!!

PS: Its the context that counts not the grammar. Had an associate that would NOT let a person finish a sentence without correcting it for PROPER sentence structure. She forget to Listen and ONLY concentrated on the grammatical. How annoying she was! (Get my point?)

Even when there is a complete absence of punctuation, because it was typed from an iphone?

I type from an iPhone and have no problem forming complete sentences or using punctuation. Typos do sometimes get the best of me though.

But I do find it puzzling that your griping about something you're clearly not perfect at yourself... Ever heard of using an apostrophe for a contraction?

Im not looking for perfection. Oh believe me, I know I am no where near perfect with mine. I am talking about blocks of text with no punctuation or breaks whatsoever.

Most people won't bother reading that crap, and you should count yourself as one of them. Don't get yourself so worked up; it's the poster's loss if they can't form a readable OP, right?

Generally I dont bother with them anymore. I dont get worked up, its more of a peeve that the OP doesnt consider the readers when they type it. But if most people dont bother reading it, then that feels a lil better. Not a real worry, just a rant. People come and go, no one cares.

I'm a professional writer and sometimes I spend way too much time writing perfectly crafted sentences on this board. Seriously, I edit every post I make, which is a waste of time. However, I can't help myself because editing is an ingrained habit.

My pet peeve isn't grammar and spelling, but rather overly long posts. Parsimony is best in online writing. I don't want to read 750 words detailing every second in a person's relationship. I wish people would stick to the TL;DR version. Part of the beauty of writing is the thinking that goes with it. Sometimes I think people could solve their own dilemmas simply by reading over what they wrote.

I don't let that stuff bug me, some people just can't spell or maybe english is their second language. The person still needs help, and that's what I focus on.

I'm can deal with the spelling, the wall of text and lack of punctuation. We do have a lot of posters from different countries, so they're posting in a different language and that's difficult.

But those that insist on using text speak get nothing but a "you're a douchebag" in my mind and I never read their posts. Now that is choosing to be lazy and stupid.

I understand where you're coming from, and it has annoyed me in the past too. I find it hard to read walls of text. Perhaps the most confusing things being lack of paragraphs and full stops (or "periods" in your parlance, I should coco).

These devices (more so than other forms of punctuation) help turn streams of conscious thought into easy to digest discrete units. A sentence is akin to a juicy rib; a paragraph a rack of ribs. Having the whole cow slapped on your plate is not good dining.

A major benefit of these fora is being able to vent, ergo it is the act of writing their post that has helped them; a response from someone gives a sense that it has not been ignored or missed. It's almost a case of not what was said, but that it was said and that it was heard that matters.

Ideally, I try to find an interesting idea or point in the wall of text and discuss that, or work with my overall impression of the situation that they have described. Avoiding the temptation to try to understand everything all of the time makes my life easier; and writing in a style that is, hopefully, clear and concise sets a good example.

I enjoy the writing styles of certain posters, and have learnt from them. It has helped me improve my writing style, and my thinking. Learning how to avoid getting angry at poor writing skills and, instead, demonstrate good ones is an effective teaching technique.

I've never understood why bad spelling and grammar bothers some people so much.

It could be that you're uptight and take life too seriously (that's how people come across to me who get bent out of shape because of spelling and grammar), so the best advice I can give would be to work on those things.

Then again, maybe you're not uptight, and it's just one of those pet peeves (we all have them I guess).

It bothers me when I can't understand what they're trying to say. Yuck.

I think getting worked up about spelling/grammar tells a lot about somebody.

In your case, you're complaining about punctuation, yet you haven't used a single apostrophe and overuse your commas.

A lot of these posters you're talking about don't have English as their first language, and so it's understandable that they don't speak amazing English.

In any case, you seem somewhat uptight and self-absorbed.

There's a big difference between English as a second language and text-speak illiteracy...

I can't/won't read posts written in text-speak because it's not a language I've learned and it's bothersome and boring trying to decipher it, so I just move on...

iPhone inserts punctuation FOR you. In fact, it will convert iphone to iPhone as well.
