ah - the joys of living over here - no poison ivy, no allergies, no poison oak, no rabies, no heart-worm ( important if you're a dog! ), no porcupines ( again if you're a dog! )

face, neck, stomach, hip, my chest

just what were you up to rolling around in poison ivy? :D

no i went fishing, like a week and a half ago....

here's my question...

i was always told/ and thought that it spreads from scratching, popping the blisters, etc...

well i was reading a med website, and it says that no, it is not contagious or spreadable..but that the oils are already on that part of your body and it just takes that long before that area reacts. i do not think so.

it was only on my stomach, then 3 days later my face, my neck, just today i noticed it on my lower leg, my hip and shoulder area!

and i am trying soo hard not to scratch- kinda like when your crack itches at work and you have to do everything not to scratch it!

but then some new place will itch and then.... bam....poison~freakin~ivy!

you have my commiserations - I had it once as a youngster ( I grew up in Canada ) - plenty & plenty & plenty of chamomile lotion - but that didn't help !!

found this:

I am a life-long sufferer of poison ivy; the blisters "bloom" quickly and spread radidly. Through trials and many errors, what works best for me is to vigorously scrub the blisters with the hottest, soapiest water I can stand, breaking as many blisters as I can, and then swabbing it all down with rubbing alcohol. It burns like the dickens but they dry up within a few days and the alcohol also seems to stop the spread.

but that sounds like a masochists solution to me! :)

I've been researching poison ivy this afternoon. (I've got somethng on my arms after using the trimmer on the yard...)

You probably had the poison ivy oil on your hands, on your clothes or under your fingernails. That's how you spread it all over your body. According to what I read, you can get poison ivy from a 5th generation casual contact with the oil on something.

Pets can get the oil on their fur and you can get it from them.

From what I read, you should wash the clothes you were weaing twice before wearing them again. I think the same should go for YOU. wash really well twice. :)

Cut your fingernails and wash under them really well too. I think that the best way to was your fingernails is a good long shampoo or two if you have lots of hair.

The best relief product I have ever used is kindof expensive, but it worked well for me. It's an alcohol based calamine spray. It used to be sold under the name "Rhuli" but I think Band-Aid bought it.

If you've scratched the crap out of your poison ivy, the spray might hurt, but if you've been good, it'll probably provide some good relief.

good luck.

Call a pharmacy and ask - sometimes antihistamines can take down the itch, but a pharmicist will be the best person to tell you what will work best.

I have friends who swear by a product called Technu. You wash with it and it's supposed to get rid of the oil from the poison ivy (not spread it around) and it dries it up.
