Hi there-

My boyfriend is in the military and is legally separated (He told me that he was from day 1) I don't know much about divorse or legal separations. He told me that he unable to file for a divorse because he was drafted and got a legal separation instead until he get's back from his tour they he will file for divorse. Does it take a long time to get a divorse? Should I believe him?

Thanks for the help!

Hold out until legally divorced. I'm not saying you can't talk/write/etc. but assume this person is married until he can prove to you otherwise. Treat him as a married man. (if you sleep with married men then I'm not sure how you would treat him any differently)

I have no reason for you to not believe him, that he will get a legal divorce when he can. Just let him prove it to you before you invest your heart, soul, body. Then, when he does prove it to you there wont be ANY doubt and you can enjoy yourself that much more. If he never does, then you will know something else is up and thankfully you didn't invest everything you have. (heart/soul/body) which will make it easier for you to move on if you need to.

To my knowlege, there isn't really such a thing as "legal separation" anymore. At least in the states I've been in.

My advice- Until the divorce is over and the ink is dry, stay away. He's still someone's husband.

All states except Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, and Texas recognize legal documentation of separation. Also my understanding is that a wife/husband cannot file for divorce while their partner is in active duty. You can check this with a military office or website.

Either way, until they are divorced there is always the chance that they can get back together so take is slow and wait for the divorce.
