Appropriate Questions on Job Interview

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm looking for a new job, and had an interview about 2 weeks ago with a small company. First, I met with the female hiring manager, it went very well. THEN I met with the male, who would be my supervisor.

He made a negative remark about the town where I live, he literally sneered, and said "WOW you live down there? That is pretty far. How long would it take you to get to work?"

I was like, WTF!!!!!!! I almost said F-U, and walked out. First, let me say, my "town" is 17 miles from that office...

I was so pissed, I didn't even send a thank you note. Now this jerk actually calls me to come back for a second interview.... good paying job...

BUT...

Thoughts, anyone?

In my opinion comment on where someone lives is like comment on their age. What do you think?

his delivery was unfortunate, but then again, some folks can't help but be jackasses ... however, the question is legitimate – if you're going to be driving a good distance the company isn't going to be comfortable with forcing you into an inconvenience, and then there's the whole other thing of you possibly being unreliable because that's a good haul and anything can happen. Unless you're on a flexible schedule? You might want to check into that.

as for the callback, don't shoot yourself in the foot by staying angry, especially if this is a job you think you could actually enjoy. Dumbasses can be dealt with accordingly, and if this guy has even an ounce of sensitivity, you can use guilt to keep him in line. Which is ALWAYS a good thing, in my opinion ;)

It wasn't just about the distance, I felt.

I don't live in a super "ritzy" town. working class... seriously, I felt like this guy looked down his nose at me. Big problem, this "dumb ass" would be my supervisor... and to begin on a negative is only downhill.

I don't understand he would give a rat's ass where I live as long as I get to work on time. Felt like he didn't give me credit for having a brain or sense enough on my own to apply to a company within reasonable commuting distance...

BTW, multi-degreed person here, with great job background...

ugh ... missed the part about him being supervisor. Not sure how to answer that, because the last 2 bosses I've had would taken a bullet for their staff and treated us with respect.

go on the interview to see if he really is a jackass, or if that was just his first, unedited-but-still-churlish comment ... if he was having an off day and knows how to behave, that might be consideration in taking the job, but if he's as thick-headed as he sounds you'll verify what you already suspect and can honestly say you tried.

the big question here is, you aren't in a position where you'd be forced to take this job because of your economic situation, are you? If you have a bit of leeway and can still keep trying other companies, that might be the best option.

honestly, I don't see how these folks land supervisory positions. A friend of mine works for the state and says that in the 20-plus years of working there, she's never had any problems working with her department heads, but this last guy is such an ass, to a point where it's affecting the whole atmosphere of her office. And now he's looking to be promoted to divisional head??? Must be nice to have that kind of pull, being pendejo and still keeping your job! :D

It's gaming the game for these folks...behave with the right people and treat the rest like sh*t...I personally can't stand it...

As for OP's question, just go to the interview and grow a little thicker skin...you're going to deal with *ssh*les anywhere and everywhere you work...if something like this gets you into a tizzy, you'll be miserable whereever you work...the question was perfect fair, although delivery wasn't optimal...

I have a very thick skin... just a totally bad vibe about that guy.

Still debating about the 2nd interview.

Got it...especially if he's going to be your supervisor...I'd go anyway...that way you leave that option open to you, and you have a chance to reassess the situation...

It'd probably look better if you went to the 2nd interview, and if you still get a bad vibe about the guy, decline an offer if they give you one. Rather than skip the 2nd interview all together.

Listen to your gut on this one.

I wasn't there to see his facial expression and tone of voice, but what he said doesn't scream "ass*****" to me. His question wasn't anything illegal or out of bounds. He might be one of those people who has no filter when it comes to what they say. And is it possible you're a bit sensitive about the area where you live? That said, he might very well be a jerk and the vibe you got from him might be totally correct, but it's hard to say from one isolated comment. Go to the next interview. See if you get the same vibe. If you do and you get a job offer, you can decide whether you really want the job or not.
