Eve
Not something talked about much but I was wondering if anyone here has suffered with constipation? Mainly I am looking for natural remedies. I would also be interested to hear if anyone has ever had it really bad. Take care, Eve x
denise_xo
I had huge issues with this about a decade ago (I would place it in the really bad-category). It's a while ago now so I don't remember the relative effects of everything I tried (more exercise, drinking more water, eating laxative inducing foods, etc), but I remember that I got something from the pharmacy in the end that was quite helpful, something that was aimed to regulated digestive processes that you could take on a daily basis, but which wasn't too harsh in terms of chemicals. Strong coffee on an empty stomach also helped (sometimes). I also asked my GB at the time, she did an initial check but couldn't really find anything.

Did it keep coming back then? Do you think dairy products had anything to do with your spell? I have suddenly gone off milk and sugar. My constipation has been here for over a week and I must admit to not ever experiencing anything like this. My Doctor has given me something to mix into water and take for the next week. I feel better already but can't believe how ill I have been. I have barely eaten and now have no appetite. Gosh, those adverts on TV have taken on a new meaning. I need to make sure this never happens again! I am a pretty healthy person, which is why I don't get why it hit me so bad. Poor me.. Take care, Eve x
denise_xo
Sorry, that was a typo, I meant GP. Yes, it kept coming back for a year or two. I'd go for a week on a fairly regular basis and it was pretty awful. It got especially bad when I was travelling. I still don't know what caused it and what exactly made it stop, but I think it helped a fair bit when I started swimming regularly. I remember that health food shops had various natural remedies for the purpose. Some of it wasn't that appealing (you had to leave seeds in water for a while and then down it etc) but if you're desperate it's usually worth a try. Also, eating regularly (every four hours, even if you don't eat that much) helps keep digestion going. Glad you're feeling a bit better!
Star Gazer
I once had it so bad I wound up in the ER thinking I had appendicitis. They sent me to radiology on a gurney writhing in pain. I'll never forget when the doctor - who looked and acted just like Ken Jeong! - slapped my xray up on the light box, pointed at the hepatic flexure and said in this really annoyed voice: "You're just constipated. And really dehydrated." The hepatic flexure is the corner of the ascending and transverse colon, and that's where things often slow down and always where my pain is. It's a sharp curve, and I joke that I feel pain when the poop is "trying to round the corner." Since then, I've completely changed my diet, and have seen tons of improvement. I eat tons of fiber - soluble and insoluble (my favorite being carrots, apples with skin, broccoli and oatmeal) - lots of water, regular exercise AND magnesium supplements. They're totally natural and work wonders when I sense stuff is slowing down. Keeps everything moving along. I also avoid stuff that seems to bind me up: red meat, popcorn, red licorice, bananas, white rice.
Author Eve
Thanks everyone! SG! Oh, do I relate to what you have said or what! I began to worry that maybe I had a tumour or something! My pharmacist saw me through two days of Senokot, two days Dulcoease (with suppositories) and one day with Lactulose.. with little movement. I should have just gone straight to my Doctor really. What he gave me has a couple of hours ago just loosened a blockage in MY SIDE. I can't even say how relieved I feel right now... H'mmm.. I dread to think what else is to come now the blockage has gone but I seriously don't care. This has been like a near death experience. I reckon this is somehow linked to driving.. but I am going to completely change my lifestyle and eating habits because of this. Of course, I now also need an indoor pool so I can swim everyday. I am NEVER going through this again. NEVER. Take care, Eve x

AHardDaysNight
Eat some prunes, it helps.
Author Eve
Alpha - I think Milk of Magnesia is for indigestion. Right, I am adding in prunes and yogurt to my diet as regular additions. Will look at what foods (if any) naturally contain magnesium too. Out go, white sugar, milk, bananas and cheese. Going to swim more often too. I will see how things go with the above and review as necessary. Take care, Eve x
josie54
Magnesium supplements do the trick for me. I take about 80 mg to 100 mg daily just for maintenance, but 500 mg for a day or two can address an acute problem. But be careful. Too much magnesium can definitely backfire. It also can make you sleepy, so if you try it, might want to take it right before bed.
Author Eve
Thank you Josie. I looked up a listing of which foods contain magnesium in the end. Not sure I would remember to take supplements! http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/food/magnesium-foods.htm This made things clearer for me as I was stuck on thinking of magnesium as some form of metal rather than something in food .. probably thinking of Magneto from X Men, lol. Yellow_Duck'y
There is a product called MiraLAX, it comes in powder form and you can mix it with a beverage. It's gentle and softens the stools, by increasing the amount of water in the intestinal tract, causing the stools to retain water, so it's easier to pass through... Happy pooping. Author Eve
12 pints of Stella, a vindaloo, and half a an hour of big brother will make the most stubborn of turds fire like a greased stick from a pigs ars*. Good luck, Eve. Lol, I couldn't even drink one pint of Stella, never mind 12! That stuff is lethal! We call it 'wife beater' where I am from.. Vindaloo and BB are yummy! .. I am fine now thanks Crusoe. At very least I finally know why I was 10lbs overweight. Couldn't work out why previously. Seems my 'friend' had been building up momentum and taking up some room for a while. Hubby said that I have probably disturbed some poor sewer worker for the rest of his life.. Glad thats over. anmolmark
Constipation (also known as costiveness, dyschezia, and dyssynergic defaecation) refers to bowel movements that are infrequent and/or hard to pass.Constipation is a common cause of painful defecation. Severe constipation includes obstipation (failure to pass stools or gas) and fecal impaction (see also Bowel obstruction).Constipation is common; in the general population incidence of constipation varies from 2 to 30%.Constipation is a symptom with many causes. These causes are of two types: obstructed defecation and colonic slow transit (or hypomobility). About 50% of patients evaluated for constipation at tertiary referral hospitals have obstructed defecation. This type of constipation has mechanical and functional causes. Causes of colonic slow transit constipation include diet, hormones, side effects of medications, and heavy metal toxicity.

Author Eve
When the 10lbs finally cleared, were you "vocal"? Did the neighbors come over to make sure everything was ok? I was very vocal indeed. .. Even had to stand up and place one foot on the toilet seat whilst I birthed it. I made my peace with God in case I burst something in my head or split myself down below whilst straining. ****ing extreme.. Take care, Eve x

Hubby said the idea was inappropriate though. There is a site where people actually rate dumps. I reckon I could have made the Top 10, easy. No intention of doing anything like that again. I have learned my lesson and will go to the toilet in the day between clients, keep drinking lots of water and keep up with the prunes and yogurt. Glad I lived to tell the tale. Apparently lots of people die on the toilet. Seriously, what an utterly rubbish death to get?! Take care, Eve x

Nothin' worse than sitting' on the can, doing some baby farts, straining and in pain! Yeah, I can laugh now too. At the time though.. WWIU, I could barely even fart for days and couldn't even cough properly. Never knew the body could hold onto waste matter like that. Ok, I heard that if you get your colon cleaned, like 12lbs of waste can come out.. but I thought the companies who do that were exaggerating to get some sales. Nope, it is true, the body can indeed hold onto a large mass of waste, even when you are minding your own business, trying to live a healthy life. The government should do something about this. I never even knew, just thought I had a bit off water retention and was waiting for my period .. Take care, Eve x
