AHardDaysNight
Because to conquer is to succeed, so they (we) are trained, and to succeed is to be rewarded by women and society. Failure is for nobodies. Whether, it's "killing or making a killing" as one researcher puts it, men have been used as performance machines by society for millennia. Well said. musemaj11
Even men with money go after risky sports!!! Men wanting to do risky things has definitely something to do with testosterone. All the guys I've dated knew everything about world wars and just loved talking about it. You can't really tell me men have no like whatsoever for wars and risky things like that or there wouldn't be so many video games trying to stimulate their excitement for it. There is a huge difference between a hobby and a job. I have a girl friend who is working in a crappy far little town to make money...I know a lot of women who have done things they hated just to make money. And a woman with no money has far less options now than she has would have before or we wouldn't have that other thread by FS. Exactly, that basically proves my point. Its situation that drives people toward one occupation or another, not gender. In the past, women either stayed home or worked a comfort-oriented job because they all had husbands to rely on as workhorses who would provide for them. But now things are changing. More men are wising up and less of them are willing to be used as workhorses anymore. So as a result, women today have to redirect their approach toward career choice because now they have to rely on themselves for survival.
AHardDaysNight
Actually, women were forced to stay at home, and were raped, abused, and otherwise humiliated by their husbands. What did the police do when your wife said you raped her, back then? They turned a blind eye.

123321
So as a result, women today have to redirect their approach toward career choice because now they have to rely on themselves for survival. If only. The fact is that in developed nations like the USA and Europe, women earn less than half the income and control the spending of something like 85% of it. Contemplate that for a moment and then get back to me on the subject of who is oppressing whom.
123321
What did the police do when your wife said you raped her, back then? They turned a blind eye. So just like men are treated now then? The facts are that (1) most domestic abuse is perpetrated by women according to unbiased studies (although men seldom report it) and (2) women are vastly more likely to make false reports with minimal repercussions. This has nothing to do with the OP, so to make the OT police happy I will also happily note that while it varies from person to person, physical attractiveness in humans tend to peak around the early 20s give or take a little, and begins an accelerated decline after 30 or so. In men physical attractiveness has historically played a less important role in getting a mate simply because historically a mans ability to perform (work, defend, die young) as a workhorse/warrior has always been very highly valued. silvermercy
OT: Ok, that's OT indeed, but I felt the need to correct a few things. I will only go with official data. -No, men are still not the primary victims of domestic violence (95% are still women): (http://www.rileycenter.org/domestic-violence-statistics.html) -Someone mentioned rape and the fact that false alarms have gone up. And that is true unfortunately. However, it does not negate facts like this: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/democraticrepublicofcongo/8509774/Woman-raped-in-Congo-nearly-every-minute.html. -The fact that men physical attractiveness has historically played a less important role in getting a mate was not simply because they had to work, defend, be a warrior etc. It was because their superior physical power gave them an advantage over weaker women (see 2nd article above) so as to establish patriarchal-based laws, traditions and regulations (they even ingrained them in religion so as to gain extra more "divine" power). Just look at modern muslim societies like Saudi Arabia to get a glimpse of how it was back then for women. Edited October 15, 2011 by silvermercy
123321
... men are still not the primary victims of domestic violence (95% are still women): ... See Strauss & Gelles, "Journal of Marriage and the Family", vol 48, for a balanced view of the actual facts. Women report and are listened to 95% of the time. Men are societally conditioned to "man up" and "get over it" when plates start to fly.
silvermercy
Ok, just had a quick look, but why is this report the most balanced one and not all the other national surveys that have been conducted with renewed and more updated methods since? Better refer to updated meta-analytic studies as those encompass as many national and international studies together and are likely to give a more accurate picture. Anyway, on the occasions where surveys have found domestic violence to be increased it's not because modern women suddenly got more violent or modern men less violent. Domestic abuse always happened. It's mostly about an increase of reporting by men. (Also fact is more women are killed by their male spouses than the opposite which means the whole level of abuse is more extreme when it comes to men, unfortunately).
