Starting a PSMF on Sunday

Recommended Posts

Not sure if any of you guys even know what I'm talking about, but PSMF is Protein Sparing Modified Fast.

I've kind of been eating "whatever" all summer, so I'm going to do this (only for about 2 weeks) to get back into keto. Which I then plan on just transitioning to my starndard keto -500c/day.

It's another one of Lyle McDonald's diets (he has quite a lot of literature about various diets), but he recommends an EC stack. I've never messed around with that before, have any of you guys?

You can't even get Ephenrine in the US anymore can you?

No, you cannot buy ephedrine legally anymore. However, there are other supplements that can help (1,3 DMAA, caffeine, Yohimbine HCL, CLA, etc.).

My advice is not to overdo it on stimulants...

What are your reasons for engaging in such a restrictive diet? I know we've talked before, and I know you're trying to lower your bodyfat, but I sort of question your reasoning as to why you think PSMF is the answer.

If I were you, I'd focus on eating MORE, getting stronger, and improving your conditioning. I would venture to say that you'll get much further following the "eat enough protein, eat enough calories to grow but not get blubbery, and lift your balls off for many years" approach.

Maybe I'm missing a big part of the picture here. Fill us in with more info about your goals, current stats, current diet, current training, etc.

Honestly my reason for doing it is much more vain. I just want to drop a few pounds before homecoming. From crunching my numbers I'm only looking at 5lbs from this weekend until homecoming (the week of the 16th). So it's nothing too drastic I'm trying to do here.

The main reason I've been more or less holding off on putting myself back into keto is because I'm taking the LSAT tomorrow. I can't afford to have the physiological side effects mess that up. So basically just setting my new deficit up at 10/2.

All summer I've basically been eating at maintenance, I know the right approach and how it all works. Just looking for a quick drop to start it out.

Basically I crushed my last short term goal, which was getting from 223 to 205. I started mid winter(march), and finished at 200(june). I haven't been eatting bad, just not being meticulous with my macros. Basically I want to hit 180-185 by the end of the year, which shouldn't be difficult since I'm 198ish now. I'd like to hit around 10% BF by spring, so I can then actually start working on bulking. I'm still around 20% now.

Honestly I've never messed with supplements at all really. I take a multivitamin, fish oil, and whey,BCAAs.

I hear you about not wanting to take the LSAT all foggy headed...

I personally think that doing a PSMF diet for 2 weeks seems kind of pointless. Yeah, you might lose a few pounds, but I don't think you'll look much better. I think that you'll look and feel deflated and wrung out, ESPECIALLY if you plan on continuing with your current training. Whoever your date for homecoming is probably won't notice either way.

2 weeks is really much too short of a timeframe, in my opinion, to be worry about such details. I guess my philosophy on the whole thing is that "vanity" isn't worth short term focus, and that physique goals should be obtained through the pursuit of athletic-minded goals.

*shrug* Everyone's entitled to their own outlook on things, but the guys and gals who I know who are physique athletes (specifically in the figure, bikini, bodybuilding, and male physique categories) ALL train and eat very athletically. Sure, pre-contest they might go on a more restrictive diet, but overall, they're training their butts off, eating well, and eating plenty. One of my friends (who competed in the Nationals at Las Vegas this year) trains very athletically (he's all about explosive movements, lifting heavy, being agile, fast, etc.) and eats 3,000 to 3,500 calories per day, including (250-300 grams of protein) per day when he's CUTTING. This guy maintains 10 percent or less bodyfat year around. The people he trains (for the competition classes I mentioned above) are all eating plenty and focusing on being athletic, explosive, and strong.

I don't think your approach is wrong, per se. I mostly just don't understand it.

The advice I give you might not be of much use to you due to this. Good luck with your body re-comp!

Yeah I know for sure it's not anything huge. It's college homecoming so it's not like a dance or anything, just seeing a lot of old friends that I haven't seen in years.

I figured I'd rather just take a few pounds up front.

Not sure if you've ever heard about this but basically for some reason while on keto you can have water retention. Basically whenever a triglyceride molecule gets taken out of a fat cell it gets replaced with a water molecule. It leads to what a lot of people call "squishy fat" basically it'll feel more like a water balloon instead of how fat normally feels.

I for some reason have that a lot.

Like before I was eating to lose -2lbs/wk, but after 7 weeks I only lost 4lbs, and didn't have any changes to my measurements/clothes or anything else. Then a few weeks in a row I had big losses, like a change of -5/6 pounds, with noticeable changes to measurements and clothing fit.

I could care less about what the scale (I only weigh myself monday and friday) says, but I was honestly getting really frustrated. After almost 2 months I didn't have any changes at all, despite knowing i was doing everything right.

So some people that do keto go through "stalls and whooshes" I just happen to be one of those people.

And doing a PSMF might give the same results, I don't know I've never tried it. However the only really big change is cutting out the dietary fat. I'm basically eating the same amount of protein/carbs I was before.

Right now my maintenance is somewhere in the 2k-2500, so I couldn't do what those guys do right now at least. I just figure it'll be easier to bulk once I get lower, instead of gaining now then cutting later.

Actually you can get ephedra legally off the Internet (the ban was lifted after about a year). Technically, it's legal in 46 states, which means stores could legally sell it if they wanted to. But after all the bad publicity, they don't dare. So you have to go online. I know of two reputable sites that sell a very good product and it's pretty cheap, although I don't even know if they're in business anymore. I stopped using ephedra a few years ago, when I was prescribed medication for ADD. I figured it would be a bad idea to combine ephedra and amphetamines. :)

Your diet sounds terrible, by the way. Even if you were taking ephedra, you'd still have to eat.

What's terrible about it? PSMF was never intended to be a long term diet at all. Essentially what I'm doing is the same as my normal long term diet, but it's without the dietary fat for a portion. 155ish grams of protein per day, I can basically eat whatever I want in terms of greens ( within reason).

Since doing an EC stack seems more trouble then it's worth I'm just going to skip that part.
