Question for everyone- Because to be honest, I'm a bit confused. This is about religion and politics...So if you hate both, you probably wont even care what I'm confused about  But hey , someone out there has to know a thing or two...so here it goes....

Does anyone else find it really hard to be both religish and a "True American". And also, why exactly are Christians so much for Bush, and so against Kerry ( abortion issue aside) . And lastly , what are you thoughts about the Pope saying that Kerry and the Gov of NJ, McGreevey are not allowed to receive holy communion.? I am very interested in your thoughts.

Thanks so much!

HokeyReligions

You'll have to define what you mean my religious and true american.

I know quite a few practicing christians who are for or against both candidates for a wide variety of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with the candidates (or their own) religious beliefs.

I don' t know anything about the Pope. Can you post a link to the information about him denying those you mentioned, holy communion?

John Kerry's support for abortion and gay marriage, both condemned as mortal sins by the Roman Catholic Church, is raising serious concerns in the Vatican over the clear apostasy of a nominal American Catholic politician.

Sorry I will explain more in a min. BRB

I've noticed that a lot of Fundamentalists are pro-Bush, but not Christians as a whole.

It's one of the disgusting things I've ever seen, I'm very upset about it. Sometimes our church reminds me of PETA, a good message, but lost in the stupid battles they choose. Almost everyone has a mortal sin on their conscience, and technically should be forbidden from the blessed sacrament--for example, any one who uses, or has a wife who uses, birth control can't recieve communion. My heart goes out to Senator Kerry as he's politically martyred by a corrupt Rome.

Honestly, our Church has done some pretty disgusting things, but this ranks among the top for me--I find it personally offensive, and I'm communally ashamed.

Are you serious about that birth control pill thing? Wow. Well at my Church for a while now, including last Sunday, they talked about how Kerry is not a True Catholic. And why is he denied Communion. He said that there are Christians in Iraq PRAYING that George Bush gets elected, cause if he is not they fear for there lives. But he said in the Secular newspapers we wont read about that. He said to read the Catholic newspapers, and get informed, and educated. I am so torn. Its like one hand, I do not believe JESUS would ever deny himself to anyone...I mean he forgave an Adultrier &a prostitute. But I guess there thinking is that he is still living in his sin, and not forgiven because he believe in it still, and is a law making, allowing others to commit this crime? I don't know. And I do not know if my priest should be getting into as much as he is. But, I do like that is passionate about it. He said GOD hates the "wishy washy" , either you are for it or against, and anything else makes him puke- he said STAND UP AND BE COUNTED!

boy oh boy oh boy ... Redemptionis Sacramentum has been "translated" by a number of secular journalists as a papal okay to deny communion to real or imagined sinners, based upon their public political support on abortion. And do they ever have it wrong!

The Texas Catholic, newspaper of the Diocese of Dallas (TX), offers an editorial that sums up the "spin" placed on the document, one which covers all bases, I thought ....

In a nutshell, the author begins his commentary with the statement that an innocent statement given to a reporter who has no understanding of the Church or how she works often misinterprets a comment, based on their lack of knowledge (we reporters are expected to be experts in a number of different things on a daily basis, and we are only as good as the information we interpret). Now, take that published report or story and post it on a website, where even MORE people have access to this misinformation ... see how misinformation is perpetuated so much that it's accepted as truth, just because someone saw it on TV or read it in the paper?

When the document on the Eucharist (Redemptionis Sacramentum) was released earlier this year, a single reporter interpreted Cardinal Arinze's answer as something completely opposite from its meaning, and people were up in arms at the thought that priests were gonna start honing in on "bad" Catholics and start denying them Communion, according to the editorial.

However, it points out that Bishop Wilton Gregory, president of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops, clarified things by saying denying Communion (or even ex-communication, IMHO) was a last resort, because the Church is a reconciliatory church, not one who automatically denies just because she can!

(The editorial points out that "the new liturgical instruction says Communion is a right unless prohibited by law.")

now, this is Quank speaking: when you take a misinterpretation of a document and put it in the hands of people who know little or nothing about Church matters -- even if they are faithful Catholics -- it's easy to be led into believing that said document is meant to divide the community, especially in light of it being an election year with a Catholic presidential candidate.

from my own personal experience, I can say that the decision to receive Communion is mine alone, based on whether I feel am in a state of grace to receive it or not. Therefore, it would go to say that a person who supports a position that is contrary to Catholic teaching must examine his or her conscience and assess whether he is in a state of grace to be able to receive Communion -- politician, axe murderer, average pew potato.

Honestly, our Church has done some pretty disgusting things, but this ranks among the top for me--I find it personally offensive, and I'm communally ashamed

Study the original document, Dyer. Only then will you see that it's human interpretation that has led to this big ruckus that's being perpetuated by people who have no real idea of the document's true message ...
