Does Atkins really work?

I dont think I have ever seen so many people on the same diet in my life...and the people are actually really losing weight around me. Anybody have a personal story, good or bad?

Two of my friends gained and gained on that diet. Diets are fads. Someone will slap a name on a diet, put out literature on it and everyone wants to go try it. For me, the best diet is the one that I am on now — the one that I am going to keep for the rest of my life.

 

I am wary of any "diets" that you go on for a few weeks, or a month or two to lose weight. Call me a fuddy duddy, but if you eat healthy you should be able to eat what you like to eat while being healthy, and you should keep that diet for the rest of your life as best you can.

 

The personal story aspect of things is that I just watch what I eat. I'm not a nutritionist, but I think I have been doing a great job. In March of 2003 I weighed around 200 pounds. By September of 2003 I weighed 155. Then, by February 2004 I was down to 140. Shortly thereafter I got down to 135 (I'm short - 5'5", being generous), and have stayed at 135 since then.

Diets are bogus. What you have to do is make a lifestyle change that you can live with. For me, it took researching healthy foods and then finding ways to prepare them that make them delicious and in finding good products that taste great and are healthy. I don't feel the slightest bit deprived, because I found really yummy things to eat. Plus, once you're at a decent weight and eating well, you can afford to enjoy a treat every now and then.

Yes, you can lose weight on that diet - then you will gain it back. The other problem with it is that with that kind of diet you will lose muscle as well as fat. In fact, with diets you generally will start losing muscle before fat - our bodies are designed to hold onto fat for survival when it senses you're in a semi-stravation mode. On the atkins diet you eat, yes. But you are depriving your body of many nutrients and the carbs it needs and your body sees this as starvation so it will burn the muscle first and the fat second.

 

Again - you will lose weight, but most people I've seen on it - including myslef back in the 80s, gained it back.

That’s completely rubbish!! first your body will burn up/use excess fat and then after that it will destroy muscle. Diets alone aren’t the answer personally I work out at the GYM and it works wonders.

 

Fat is basically storage that will be used first. The reason you think you lose muscle is because you might feel weaker when on a diet, that’s because you have less energy. When I was ill for 3 days I didn’t eat a thing (just had water) I couldn’t even lift my head because I was so weak, that wasn’t because I had no muscle it’s because I simply didn’t have the energy. After I could eat again it was back to my normal self (just as strong) but I lost a few stone.

NO Chris - do some reading - fat is the hardest thing to get rid of. Your body will hold onto it. Muscle, however, is mostly water. Maybe what I should have said is muscle mass, however, whatever you want to call it, your body will burn it up. It's easier to burn up than fat.

The Atkins diet is amazingly popular where I work, many of them have had really good results including my boss who lost 30 lbs.

Personally I think he is exaggerating a little.

 

Anyway, the diet can work for you, but like others stated, its a lifestyle change. You can't just stop and expect not to gain it back. I also don't care for that diet much because well, theres no carbs...and those are my favorite things. Also stated above, you will lose muscle as well.

 

I found wonderfull success with the body for life program. It's very balanced, promotes a healthy lifestyle and allowed me to still have those days where I could eat whatever I wanted.

 

I believe the Atkins diet works for someone who is more interested in their actual weight loss and not in being healthy or adding some workout to their lives. The BfL program is much more balanced but requires a greater commitment to your health and physical fitness. It also is a lifestyle change.

:laugh: I have a co worker who says she has lost 50 pounds, and I think that was exaggerated as well :D too funny. Well I have a cruise in about 3 weeks, I wanted to loose as much weight before then ya know. So I was thinking about Atkins, but from what I'm hearing, once I start eating the carbs, Im gonna gain in right back. What is going to happen to all these people on it now then, once they go off...we are going to have even fatter people all around us ? :o

Muscle is actually the first thing that your body starts to feed on when it is deprived of nutrients that it requires. Muscle contains the ideal cocktail of fuel that our bodies need to survive. The only way you get rid of the fat is by burning it off and turning it into energy.

 

When deprived of enough fuel intake, the human body will begin to consume the most nutritious parts of itself &mash; MUSCLE!

 

When you work out at the gym, you get rid of any excess fat by doing cardio, and lots of it. The actual lifting, along with your diet, is what builds up your muscle fibers after they have been torn down from a good workout. Well, to be more specific you rebuild while you sleep, but that is another story.

 

What I mean to say is that: Your body will feed off of your muscle when you do not eat enough. Simply not eating will not get rid of excess fat very effectively. Think about it: Your body is going to pick the most nutritious, best part of you to eat. Obviously it is going to eat its own muscle before anything else :)

Body for Life by Bill Philips, I swear by it. I lost 40lbs in 12 weeks, and I didnt even follow it correctly. And it stays off as long as you keep exercising and dont eat too badly. And by the time your done you will love exercise, trust me.

I gained ALOT of weight when I had my daughter.. alot of which I didn't lose and kept on. After 2 months, I went on Atkins and within a month.. I lost 18 lbs.

 

 

My dad... who was EXTREMELY overweight... so, obviously it would be easier for him to lose, did Atkins for 4 months and lost 46 lbs. So, it does work. However, after you lose the weight.. you have to maintain and not go back to your old eating habits. I've kept my weight off. My dad has gained back about 10 lbs but that's because my dad went back to his old eating habits and actually a little worse.

 

Even now..... I still eat freakin' fast food about every day, and drink my cokes and mountain dews cause I love them.... but I've managed to keep it off. So you don't neccesarily gain it back after you lose it. I'm proof of that.

Mu husband lost about 50 pounds on Atkins, and I believe him. I've seen the pictures. He was a fat bastard! He also lowered his cholesterol by 30 points. He did lose some muscle, though, although he still looks good. It is something that I think you have to maintain forever, though. He cheats a little now and again. I feel like I'm on Atkins by Proxy sometimes, especially when we first started seeing each other. I'm over that now, though. I eat what I want and he does the same.
