"We're off and on"

I met a girl yesterday at a coffee shop. I felt like the convo was going pretty well, so I asked her if she had a boyfriend (to make sure the coast was clear before I asked for her number), and she said, "Well, we're off and on." I asked why they were "off and on," and she said that he was long distance and was at a different stage in life than she was.

 

After she said that, she continued to ask me questions and kept talking to me. I ended up asking for her number anyways and she gave it to me. She might have given it to me because when I asked her for it, I said that we could be study buddies, since we both go there often (so I framed it as a friends situation).

 

So what does "We're off and on" mean in girl code? Does that mean she's available/looking? Or something else? I really want to ask her out (if she's available), !
