the wizard
Let me start off by saying that I work out 5 days a week, and it shows. My girlfriend, when we met, was about 160 lbs standing at about 5'3". She's a very pretty girl with a feminine face. The only thing is, she kind of has an upside down pear body. She's very top heavy (large breasts and the fat distribution went more to her upper body) and her lower body is smaller/skinnier. She has skinny legs and her ass is little to none with hardly any shape. I like women with nice asses. Ass is my thing, its what catches my eye. My girlfriend has since lost 31 lbs and works out religiously. I'm very proud of her and love being there to motivate her. She asked me for pointers on how to get her ass more of a round and toned, shaped look. My question is, will any amount of leg/glute exercises save her from the infamous pancake ass? Surely when she loses all of the weight she'll be a petite woman with a proportionate ass but she wants more ass, a more round and toned one. What exercises should I recommend to her? I thought maybe squats, lunges, various leg machines. But I'm not sure what effect they'll have on her bottom. ;/ Edited November 22, 2011 by the wizard
Cypress25
she kind of has an upside down pear body. She's very top heavy (large breasts and the fat distribution went more to her upper body) and her lower body is smaller/skinnier. She has skinny legs and her ass is little to none with hardly any shape. That's known as an "apple shape." Most women are pears, with most of their fat in the lower body (butt, hips, thighs). Men are usually apples, with most of their fat in the stomach and upper body. But there are exceptions to every rule, and your girlfriend is one of them. It's very difficult to fight your natural body type. Your girl can lose weight, but she'll always be an apple. It's your DNA that determines where you carry most of your body fat, and apples are genetically programmed to be top-heavy, just like pears are genetically programmed to be bottom-heavy. You can tell by the way her body shape changes as she loses weight. For example, I'm a pear. When I start losing weight, it's my upper body that shrinks first. It's pretty easy for me to lose weight in my arms and breasts. But I have to lose a lot of weight before my thighs and ass even start to shrink. For some reason, my ass hangs on for dear life. If your girl is an apple, she probably loses weight from her lower body first. She'll have to fight like hell to make her upper body shrink. Your girl can do exercises to tone her glutes and the surrounding muscle, but there's not much she can do to make her butt significantly rounder. She might be able to get a little more shape, but it would be unrealistic to expect drastic changes.
Author the wizard
Well her upper body is losing most of the weight, her lower body appears to be staying similar. I dunno, I guess I'll have to stick it out. I was hoping she'd lose so much weight itd even out.
Cypress25
And do try not to fixate on her weight. I know you mean well, but weight can be a very sensitive issue for women, and I'm sure she's working as hard as she can. Weight loss is supposed to be slow and steady, and for petite women, it usually takes longer. (I'm 5'1" and you wouldn't believe how long it takes me to lose a pound. Being so small, I have to stick to 1300 calories a day to keep my weight down, and women aren't supposed to go below 1200 for health reasons.) So don't let your impatience show, otherwise your girl might be driven to drastic measures to try to speed up the process.
Author the wizard
I hope she gains it back. Why would you want that? Heh. Anyways, I've been nothing but supportive and motivate her. I never talk about how much she has to go but rather how much she's lost so far and voice my appreciation and pride over that. She's starting to tone up her lower body so we'll see how that plays out. Was wondering which exercises will build and tone her thighs , hips and glutes. Was thinking squats. tman666
Box squats, lunges, Romanian deadlifts, sled sprints, car pushes, glute-ham raises, etc.

I never talk about how much she has to go but rather how much she's lost so far and voice my appreciation and pride over that. What I meant was, stop taking such an interest in her weight loss endeavors. It's fine to be supportive and compliment her every so often, but don't focus on it to the exclusion of everything else. If you talk about nothing but diet and fitness with her, she'll start to think that's all you care about. Instead of giving her fitness advice, encourage her to get advice from a certified personal trainer (especially since you're not qualified to give such advice). You seem a little too interested in her weight loss efforts, and a little too eager to help her lose more weight. Do you compliment her on anything other than her weight loss? Do you talk to her about anything other than fitness? Don't let it become the focal point of your relationship, otherwise she'll think you're only proud of her when she's losing weight. I dunno, I guess I'll have to stick it out. I was hoping she'd lose so much weight itd even out. I find this comment rather worrying. If you have to 'stick it out', why are you with her? You were hoping that she'd lose so much weight her body would even out? Have you got any idea how horrible that sounds? What is she - a 'project' or a flawed work of art that you're hoping will become perfect one day? If you don't love her and find her attractive as she is at 160lbs, 130lbs or whatever weight it is you're hoping she will shrink to, then you're with the wrong woman! Lauriebell82
I think everyone has parts of their body that are flawed and that they could do without. Very few individuals have the "perfect body." I am bottom heavy so I have bigger legs and skinnier stomach/face/arms. Your gf probably won't be able to change her flaws. The only thing I would suggest is squats but fighting your given body type is a losing battle, believe me! I've tried. Keep motivating her, but also encourage her to accept that she will have the same body type no matter WHAT weight she is.
FitChick
People complain about kettlebells giving them bubble butts, which is why I don't use them. Look at youtube videos to see examples. There are lots of DVDs with kettlebell workouts.
