Online dating.. people lying about who they are common? Hiding identities?

I'm on a popular dating site and noticed that a guy was checking out my profile. I was drawn to his profile because his profile picture was of him on a horse and I've owned and love horses. So I click on his page and view more of his pics. One was of him wearing a jersey of a popular professional hockey team. A last name was on the jersey so a few days later, I googled it.

I guess he is a recently retired hocky player. We IM'd each other on the site and he gave me his number and I gave him mine. On Thursday we talked on the phone and have been texting since.

The think is, he is going by a false name and does not mention at all what he does or says what his real name is. Doing a reverse phone number lookup, it matches up where the "real" hockey player lives. Should I just chalk this up as some crazy fan posing to be him which would mean this person is strange/crazy? Or should I go along with his lies if it really is him?

I'm not sure how to handle this. His texts and our conversations have been sweet and he seems really nice but I'm not sure really who this person really is?? What should I do?

Ask. He was wearing the jersey of a hockey team with his name on it so he didn't try THAT hard to cover up his identity. It's a perfectly legitimate question to ask.

The weird thing is, I did ask his name. He gave me a "fake" first name only even though clearly the guy in the picture is that hockey player. So if it is him, he clearly doesn't want me to know the truth about him or like I said he's some crazy poser.

If it is him, I don't want to appear to be some crazy fan and come out and say. "look, you are either posing as john doe the hocky player or you're just lying about who you are". I don't even follow hockey.

Maybe he has his reasons for lying if he really is this hockey player or maybe he's just some crazy fan that happens to live in the same city as the real hockey player does.

How can you over-think something so simple so much? Maybe he gave you his middle name, most people in the Western world have at least 2 christian names.

He posted a photo of himself wearing that jacket. It's perfectly legitimate to ask him anything related to that since it's in the public domain. Why would you think he is crazy without even having a conversation about his identity in the first place?

So you've been talking on the phone and texting this guy and he has yet to give you his real name? That's a bit strange isn't it? If he's the supposed hockey player and is so secretive about his identity why the hell is he on some internet dating site? So he's the hockey dude. Why is he just not saying it? He's got his pictures up on his profile, so just come out and say "I'm Wayne Gretzky." All seems off to me.

Authentic professional sports jerseys with an athletes number and name are very popular and accessible these days. Hell, if I thought wearing Brian Urlacher's college jersey would mean women actually thought i was him..i would post profiles on all the dating sites!

Did it occur to anyone that the Name on the hockey jersey is his favorite player? and not his name?

A lot of people have hockey jerseys with the name and number of players they like. And it will mostly likely be a player from the same city they live in.

Google the hockey player. If the hockey player's picture matches the guy on the dating site, it's the hockey player. Mystery solved.

That is what I was thinking too... So how would you go about asking? How would you word it I guess. Or would you just see where it leads? Maybe being a public figure it's not so easy? I don't know. Maybe I should post his pics on here and you guys decide? I wont say what site or anything in case it's really him..

I did google the hockey player and it does match. The thing is, it could be a fan posing as him. It's also strange that he leaves his inbox full so if anyone wants to contact him, he gives out his personal email. Also, after googling him he either has a wife or is now divorced. So not sure what to think of that as well.

"Hey we've been talking back and forth for awhile now. Would you mind giving me your real name?" Just say that. Simple and if he doesn't give you his name, he's a shady dude. Not someone you should date.

Just come out and ask "Are you a hockey player and what's your REAL name dude?" "Let's just get it out in the open and if you can't, lose my number."

If this man can't even give you a NAME without pulling teeth, what is the rest of the relationship going to be like?

I realize he may want to just be cautious, but you have been communicating back and forth now for a bit. It's not like you are asking for his social security number or his American Express credit card number. Dude needs to relax or he shouldn't be dating.

My guess is that he's the hockey player for sure. That isn't just some pic of a hockey player on the ice. It's a personal picture.

And DAMN girl, he is fine as hell:love: Love that facial hair. Delicious.:p Hot or not, he needs to loosen up or dating him is gonna be hell.

Haha! yeah, he is fine as hell! If it's really him. Too good to be true? Plus what sucks is that he's in Toranto Canada and I'm in Wisconsin. Wondering what he was doing searching for girls in Wisconsin? It's not that he's THAT far away but still, even dating would be hard regardless. At least Verizon considers Canada domestic when it comes to texting so it costs me nothing. haha

If we continue on texting and talking, I will bring it up soon depending on how often he keeps in contact with me. I just want to bring it up in a way that's not pushy or threatning.

Girl if I lived in China, I'd be traveling to see that man. He is gorgeous. Chest hair, nice stubble...just yum:D

It's really simple or it should be. Just ask him what his real name is. No need to beat around the bush. And how is asking his real name threatening? Like I said, you aren't asking for his credit card number or anything. A name is nothing.

I say don't bring it up!! He doesn't want you to know its him because he probably wants to see what you are about first. Just go and meet him in a very public place and see if its the same person. My vote. Say nothing. You look crazy in his eyes googling etc. And if it is him, damn hes hot

They've been talking for a while now. To ask what his name is, is not crazy by any means. Telling him he's fine as f*ck and you'd like to have 10 million of his babies would be crazy.:lmao:

Hot right? The guy literally caused my computer to smoke. OP should have a hot little fling with him even if he's a shady dude. He might not be worth having a relationship with because he's waaayy too guarded, but a fling wouldn't be out of the question.

That's kinda was I was thinking... Maybe he wants to see if I'm some money hungry crazy person. If I were rich and well known, maybe I'd do the same. But like others have said, why would he put that jersey pick on there if he was really trying to hide? I don't even follow hockey and figured it out. Didn't think twice about it though until his inbox is full and he won't clear it out.

I wish I could just go on a date soon but he lives too far away. A date would clarify A. who he reallys is B. if he he's still married C. if we hit it off. So, I can't let myself get all caught up on how hot he is b/c he would be some crazy poser. lol..

Confilicted but I should be because again he's so far away. I should just go with the flow

Well, I finally asked him about who he really is. A few nights ago he mentioned that I should come and visit him for a couple of days. I told him I would think about it but would feel better that he would come here. We exchanged texts and it got late.

The next day (last night) he texts me asking how my day is going. I asked him if he has facebook and we could use that to better get o know each other. He said he had to take it down due to THOUSANDS of people from the dating site adding him. I asked what that was about. I asked him if he was a crazy fan posing as the hockey player and capitalizing on someone else to gain popularity with women on the site.

He responded very dumbfounded.. He said that It was a holloween costume of the hockey player and he's not him. He said he's just very private and it takes awhile to open up. I told him I still felt somthing was off and asked him to put my mind at ease. I said to him "you invited me for a visit. take a pic of your ID and text it to me and I'll do the same so I at least know who I would be visiting". He said he can't because his phone and laptop "went for a swim"... I'm thinking "how are you texting me without a phone" but didn't call him on it.

I bascially ended it by telling him to contact me when he's ready to open up and gave him my email. He got really defensive and said that I was being rude and nobody has ever treated him that way I just did.

I'm sorry, but was I rude? Don't I have a right to know WHO I'm visiting? Wouldn't the secrets freak you out a little? Am I in the wrong? So, I'm sure I freaked him out by being too forward but I'm not flying to CANADA to visit a man if I don't really know who he is or even his last name. Something is way off here and I feel like it's his loss for not opening up.

BREATH.. ok.. sorry, was venting. feel better now. Thanks for reading. :)

Tell him to prepay hotel and airfare for your trip to Canada. Even then, he still might not tell you who he was. Are you sure he isn't in prison?
