Any one else tried St John's Wort?

Hi everyone,

I feel a little weird even making this post, I'm not a doctor or a pharmacist after all. But I honestly believe this herb has really helped me, and want to see whether anyone else has anything to share about this topic.

Since my break up 4.5 months ago I felt incredibly anxious, and, more recently, incredibly sad. I've gone low contact then NC, take every opportunity to go out with friends, I exercise, and have started some new activities. But I can't shake the sadness. I feel unmotivated, very lonely, a little hopeless.

I have signed up for mindfullness classes. I don't really want to see a counsellor or psych one-on-one, I really do feel like I'm dealing OK and I will get over this and come out a stronger person, it's just the loss of my first real love has really hit me hard. GPs here give out antidepressants like candy but I'm really concerned about the efficacy, addiction potential and side effects of antidepressants.

About 2 weeks ago I started taking st John's Wort, a herb that has been found to be effective in treating mild to moderate depression. In most countries you can buy it next to the other vitamins.

The recommended dose is 2g of extract (1 tablet) 3 times per day (with meals), but it's almost impossible to overdose, you'd have to eat bottles of the stuff. I've been taking two tablets 3 times per day instead, I read a few forums which said that the effect might kick in quicker that way. This friday night I was alone and feeling really sad and lonely and I took about 2 more tablets a few hours after dinner.

I felt genuinely happy for the first time in weeks, and probably the first time since the break up I've felt happy alone. I watched crappy TV shows that I used to love online while working on some hobbies that I haven't touched since the break up. I read some blogs and literally laughed out loud at some of the funny things I read. I felt a little more at peace with things. Each day I wake up with a sad, sinking feeling in my stomach. Then I have a tablet with breakfast and the day seems to get a little bit less hopeless from breakfast onwards.

So any one else tried St John's Wort?

I know a couple of men who tried that at one time for helping improve their outlook and disposition. Didn't seem to help them, but it sounds like it's working for you. Might have some side effects though, so I would suggest, since herbs are not regulated by the FDA, you may want to do some further research about it, just in case.

I've tried it and like the overall effect. Like a small gin and tonic on a summer's eve. Light, refreshing and just takes rounds the corners, without blurring the edges.

I hear that it's prescribed in Germany for mild depression.

broken-and-lost

It does work in fact it works in same way as anti-d's without side effects but you have to build it up in your system and you can't take both, it does take the edge off a lot of the time but like anti-d's it doesn't remove the pain just numb it a little.

I used it in a bad breakup around three years ago. I don't know if it was a placebo thing or what but I always felt like it contributed to my recovery. After around three months I decided to stay off it.

I'd recommend it. Can take a few weeks to kick in though.
