Christmas presents to and from our SO's

If you exchange holiday gifts with your so, what did you get them, and why? What would you like to receive?

Is your SO a good selector of gifts? Are you?

I got my boyfriend a thick, rare book on film editing that I think he'll love since it's a favorite of one of his favorite directors, and a box of really good gourmet dark chocolate (he's crazy about dark chocolate).

I haven't opened the beautifully wrapped gift he got me yet but I can't wait to see what it is. :) I'm not hoping for anything in particular from him, but I have a feeling whatever it is will be well-chosen. I know he put a lot of thought into it, and he bought it over a month ago.

In general, I kind of suck with figuring out good gifts but I think I did an excellent job with this one.

I love Christmas.

I got my husband a new camcorder. That's what he said he would like to get, so I offered to get it for him for Christmas. We lost the charger for our old one, and it used tapes, which could not be transfered to our computer, so we really needed the upgrade. He got me a piece of art that was hand made by a relative of ours which he purchased at her art show.

I don't know what she got me but I got her an outfit she kept eyeing up at a store in New York and a leather coat she was fawning over on the internet. I also got her a bunch of little stuff as well.

I'm getting him clothes from his favorite store, an iTunes gift card and something else that he wanted.

I already know what he's giving me because he told me. He usually gets me a handbag from a famous handbag company I like. He also got me some skin care products from a line I like.

I'm a good selector of gifts for other people like my child and my friends. It's hard to buy stuff for him because he generally has what he wants and he has the means to buy what he wants throughout the year. I'm sure he would say the same for me.

My husband is getting a gigantic chainsaw that he can use to cut high limbs, and some pretty fine Carhartt work gloves and an Elmer Fudd style hat. Isn't that romantic? He will love the chainsaw; I'm pretty sure he will venture out immediately into the forrest and start "parking it out" without even waiting for waffles or the rest of the presents to be opened. He is also getting a very hilarious and adorable framed photograph of himself sitting on his tractor with his little dog on the seat next to him. He has no idea that I sent mugs with the same picture on them to his adult children. He's not the type to send anyone pictures of himself … he'd find it unseemly. Heh, heh. Oh, yeah, and socks.

I have no idea or wishes regarding what I'd like to receive from him. I must be a terrible person to buy for. I am tremendously particular about what I would wear, what fragrance, what kind of candle I'll burn, etc. If I really want something, I will get it … and he, on the other hand, has no sense of smell or fashion, hates to shop, is not offended by Walmart and does not even go online at all since his computer blew up a couple months ago. It will be interesting to see what he comes up with! Last year, he drove all the way to the coast to buy me some earrings made of leather that I had admired in a gallery the prior summer … which I loved. So, he is certainly not hopeless in the gift selecting department!

Happy holidays to all of you!

External battery charger because his phone battery doesn't last very long and some stick-on warming pads because he's outdoors a lot. Not very romantic but very practical. Will probably also take him out to dinner as a belated birthday treat.

I'd like an experience gift - something that I probably wouldn't have thought of for myself or the opportunity to do on my own. I think something like jewellery is okay but might not be as meaningful.

From what I've seen, he tends to be a joke gift giver to friends and family and has some hilarious anecdotes regarding the gifts he's given. I have a feeling that I'm probably not going to get a joke gift though.

When I buy gifts, I try to think about what the person needs/wants/likes but might not buy for themselves. Or something that might make their life a little bit better/easier in some way. On occasion, I might buy something frivolous and decorative, but it's usually part of a larger gift.

Not sure if that makes either of us good at selecting gifts - guess it depends on what is considered "good!"

We don't do individual gifts since we had kids, Christmas is for kids only in our house. Before kids, we used to pick out stuff like video games, books, etc.

We exchanged gifts tonight on Christmas Eve. Neither of us killed ourselves in shopping, but tried to be thoughtful.

I got him: A flannel bathrobe, a sweatshirt with a meme type design, and bath products from his favorite store.

He got me: A bunch of bath products from his favorite store. I think they are just for me, but I'm willing to share.

Yes, my boyfriend loves homemade bath products.

I admit that I phoned it in for Christmas. I didn't even wrap his gifts. I'm emotionally exhausted from some trauma at work (layoffs right before Christmas), so I am tense and freaked out.

I'll make good use of the bath bombs. And he's making use of the bathrobe I got him. He's wearing it right now while surfing the Internet.

I just opened the Christmas gift he got me. It's a six-inch thick tome on a director I love that includes his preproduction notes, sketches, full color prints, early scripts, etc. I couldn't be happier.

I wish he were here.

We tend to make a bigger deal out of birthdays than Xmas, given our cultural background, especially his.

I got him a coffee-plunger - horribly unromantic but I know he'd wanted one for a while. I got some gourmet liquer chocs I'd always wanted to try.

We agreed earlier not to exchange Christmas presents this year due to lack of money.

I still ended up getting him a cheesy gift "The book of love" and filled it with famous quotes that I feel apply to our relationship.

He ended up getting me earrings that he thinks match my eyes, sunglasses and a ticket to all night movie marathon on boxing day.

I'll let her share what she got for Christmas but I finally got the new camera that I was long overdue for. I also got a laptop cooling fan and my Mom got us both a new pot and pan set that we needed.

Both CE and I are good selectors considering we bought things that were on each others lists.:p

She's been over a few times and this is what she thought I needed.

I got him a stand mixer (he likes to bake) and a couple video games he wants. Also a few small things, like T shirts and the like. Oh, and a year of wine club membership he was looking at but couldn't bring himself to buy. I suppose spent quite a lot since I had a good year and I love buying gifts.

The new hubby is a great selector of gifts, generally. He is always listening and trying to figure out things I would want, and he has good taste. At any rate, as long as a gift is thoughtful and seems like "me" I'm really, really happy with it, and that's what he's great at, so I'm sure it'll be a fantastic pick.

ETA: I say "giving" because we aren't exchanging presents till Tuesday. He's visiting his family, and mine had come to town, so we unfortunately are spending our first Christmas apart. New Year's is a bigger holiday for me anyway.

New HUBBY!?!? You aren't married yet are you?!

Mine gave me beautiful lambskin, cashmere lined gloves. And, a set of "Frog Togs." For all of you who are indoorsmen / women, those are pretty amazing lightweight rain gear. AND, a very cozy black fleece. He did a lovely job of picking out gifts! I really appreciate it.

Happy holidays, once again.

Yeah, we went down to the courthouse. We weren't going to do a big thing anyway, and we were moving in together (officially, though I was basically living there anyway) January 1st so we just got the paperwork out of the way. We will have a reception in the spring.

Congratulations and best wishes, Zengirl.

My husband and I bought and moved into a new house just a few months ago, are still renovating, and our rental properties are at a bit of a loss in this economy, so we made a pact to only get each other practical stuff we needed anyway for the house. I got him a lawn mower and a weed whacker, as this is the first time in years that we've had a big grassy yard we had to take care of by ourselves, and it's growing totally wild back there for lack of proper tools. I cheated a little and also got him a sweater and a gadgety thing I thought he'd like.

He got me a giant automatic cat litter box, the kind that cleans itself. We have three cats, so unromantic as that is it was a pretty good gift. He also cheated and got me a beautiful hand-carved box to store photos and letters in, and a space in a beekeeping course, which is awesome.

We're also going on a short family trip over NYE and considering that a gift to ourselves.

He's not a great natural gift giver, but I have to admit I can be tough to buy for also as I am particular and he and I have different sensibilities. He does well if he pays attention though--he has access to my online wishlists, and I also give pretty broad hints (hence the memory box and the beekeeping class).

I'm usually a pretty good gifter, so that role has fallen completely to me--I buy all the kids' presents, everything for both our families. I sometimes have a hard time with him, though, because he is most deeply interested in kind of obscure, antique or elite tech gadgetry and I'm pretty clueless in that area.

well, congratulations, Zengirl, and best of luck & love in your new adventure together!:love::love:

My husband is getting a gigantic chainsaw that he can use to cut high limbs, and some pretty fine Carhartt work gloves and an Elmer Fudd style hat. Isn't that romantic? LMAO ... oh, I think I can tell who's been with her honey for more than a few years, because it's us long-timers who tend to get excited over the mundane things (household appliances! small kitchen appliances! gadgetry we prolly don't need but desire!) we receive from our honeys as gifts :laugh::laugh:

let's see: This year he got a couple of new zippered hoodies and long-sleeve shirts and a Carhart jacket because we said no gifts since money's tight this year. Me? I told him not to get me anything for Christmas, but to let me have the Gold Card and shop today, and I made a killing with half-price chocolates (the good stuff, too!), Christmas food containers and tea-towels with a Christmas theme. My birthday's next week, so I'm going to ask him to help fund my trip to South Texas at the end of February!

I know what you mean, but actually we just got married in September! We'd been together 2 years before that. We're old farts though, so that accounts for the "practical" gifts.

I gave BF a big stoneware mortar and pestle so he can crush the mint for his mojitos properly. He also likes using whole spices/making spice blends so I knew it would be good for him. I also gave him a pair of black leather dress boots, and a harmonica because he used to play and had been talking about buying a new one.

He ordered a gift for me and I have a good idea of what it is even though he never gave me a direct indication. My biggest hint is that it hasn't arrived yet--I'm thinking he ordered a sari from India. He bought me a 'backup' gift on Christmas Eve before we headed out to see my dad and brother so I would have something from him to open Christmas Day; he was/is bummed my original gift hasn't come. I was eyeing a super-cute tote bag in Macy's made of recyclable materials and once I turned my back and went into another section he snatched it up.

Citizen Erased

I received a Kindle Touch, a cover for the Kindle and a foot spa. I left most of my books in Sydney so the Kindle I love, and the poor guy gets a break from my foot rub needs. :p Plus there were some delicious chocolates in my stocking, perfect!

Most importantly, I got to spend Christmas with my husband for the first time.
