Gaining Weight on a Vegetarian Diet?

Recommended Posts

Any vegetarians or good diet informed people with some advice for this? I lost some weight after a breakup and other health issues so I'm trying to get back to my happy weight. I'm exercising and eating right and all that but I was hoping for some advice on other healthy ways to gain some weight on a vegetarian diet. I know to eat more nuts and things like potatoes and pasta and try to get more oils? Anything else anyone could suggest?

Depends on how strict you are. Eat eggs and nonfat Greek yogurt, which is delicious by the way. Designer Whey protein powder is very tasty in fruit smoothies. Beans are fattening but only eat them at night when you are not around other people! Cheese, if you are not afraid of the fat. I love almond butter on Ezekiel bread for breakfast. Light but filling.

Hahahaha yeah I have problems staying at a weight I'm happy with cause I can't even keep the meat I have on me most of the time because I have a fast metabolism, I'm hyperactive, I exercise, and sometimes I don't have time to eat. So eating muffins and junk all day seemed like a good idea but all it really does is make me lethargic.:lmao:

I wouldn't try to gain weight. Just eat healthy lots of fresh fruits and vegetables. I'd stay away from processed foods, and oils, and dairy (cheese, milk, butter, yogurt)... but if you really want to gain weight and don't mind stroke/heart diseases just have lots of milk shakes.

Why would eating processed buttery crap all day ever seem like a good idea. The wait you'll gain will look bad not to mention all the damage you'll be doing to yourself raising your risks for cancer/heart/stroke problems...

Just eat alot of nuts and seeds. Have a lot of fresh and veggies. Then maybe a few eggs a week. But avoid the eggs if you can.

That's what I'm trying now. But yeah the weight I'm more content with is like 130 or 135 which is the highest I've even been and I like how I look because of my bone structure etc at that weight. I'm like only 120 or 125 so I'm kinda bony right now and I liked the curves I had.

That sounds like a recipe for weight loss, which is counterproductive. It also sounds like a vegan diet, and the OP is vegetarian. Besides, you gotta get protein and calcium from somewhere. Eggs and low-fat dairy are actually good for you and essential for bone health. Peanut butter is also a good veggie-friendly food that is high in calories and healthy fats.

And where did you hear that information the dairy industry? It's been proven that their is better calcium in vegetables. It's been proven that dairy causes brittle bones. It's all been proven.

I agree though milk would be a very easy way to gain weight while increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack. Better yet have a few milk shakes a day and she'll surely gain weight.

It's been proven that dairy causes brittle bones? How would it do that? It's common knowledge that the calcium and vitamin D from dairy sources is good for you. And skim milk is 90 calories per 8-ounce serving. That's not going to make you gain weight or cause heart attack or stroke. It's fat-free, low in calories, and high in protein. If you're lactose intolerant, you should avoid dairy, of course. For everyone else, low-fat or non-fat dairy is a healthy source of calcium. Veggies are good too, but it's not enough. I don't know why you're so afraid of dairy, Dust. There's nothing bad or dangerous about it.

Yes it has been proven. Dairy and animal protien in general actually leach calcium from a person more so then they give. Countries that consum large ammounts of dairy also have the highest inscedence of brittle bones like Osteoporosis.

I believe in being very careful with animal protein in take. Treat it like alcohol. Be careful because the long term effects of eating and drinking the way big business wants us to is an early grave and greatly effected qualitiy of life.

Do I eat cheese, and drink milk and enjoy a steak now and then yes I do. But I'm hardly going to kid my self and even pertend skim milk is good for me.

For most of human existance a person wouldn't drink milk past infancy. That milk would be from their mother. As far as meat goes yes people ate it but it far from ammounted to the way we farm and eat mass amounts of meat now.

They ate a lot of fresh plants and vegetables and this comprised the bulk of their diet. These people were tall and powerful people who lived truely long lives.

Now we have dairy and factory farm meat being shoved at us in quantities so high its sickening. Of course Ice cream, cheese, milk can taste good. Doesn't mean they are good for you. Also when the industry that also makes the money from the sale of milk tells you milk is good for your bones you better think twice... Yes milk has calcium, no milk is not good for your bones. Been proven beyond any doubt milk, all milk including skim is very bad for you. It's not even a debate research it for yourself. A book I'll recomend is the China Study.

Yeah I heard that about animal products too. I've actually been drinking soy milk instead of regular milk for the most part because I think it's more beneficial to me because of my vegetarian diet.

So far so good though I can't see my ribs as much and I'm getting a bit more meat on my bones now woot! Thanks for the help peeps :D

This, I've also heard is true. I learned this when I was a teenager (and then researching homemade animal diets: you're supposed to feed meat and bones to them, because the calcium in the bones, combats the phosphorus in the meat).

You could add a tablespoon of flax oil into smoothies, and I've been told that bananas add weight.

Banana-peanut butter smoothie: soy milk, bananas, peanut butter (1-2 tbsp per cup of milk)

you can also snack on corn chips with guacomole; avocados are a good source of fat.

try cooking with coconut oil.

Nuts, muesli, and dairy. Did you know roasted nuts and muesli have double the calories per 100g compared to a McDs cheeseburger, and about 6 times that of lean chicken breast? ;)

Other than that, fruits are great for vitamins, and have a relatively high sugar content, so smoothies will boost your calorie intake too.

Untrue. Would you quote your sources before bringing up controversial 'facts', please (and yes, please make sure they are real, credited sources, not some random book or direct sales site)? Emedicine states that 'Osteoporosis can occur in persons of all races and ethnicities. In general, however, whites (especially of northern European descent) and Asians are at increased risk.' Asians, particularly, are most definitely not the highest consumers of dairy. Most Asians do not even take dairy, and we have the highest incidence of lactose intolerance.

The only soy you should eat is organic as all the others are genetically modified. Oddly, Monsanto doesn't want consumers to be informed.
