My hairline goes really far back and my forehead stands out, so having my hair longer in any style would look ridiculous on me.

You can have a few strands/curls over your forhead. You can get a perm and make it curly if it's not (once it's longer). Longer hair makes a guy look more romantic and artistic. :)

Plus I don't think my hair looking a darker red colour is flattering on me in the slightest.

Why darker red? How about brown or honey or even dark blond? Or highlights? You can even do it yourself once a month. It takes an hour or so and it's cheap.

That's surprizing, since Ireland has so many redheads, you would think that the UK would be more accepting of it.

Maybe because Ireland is not part of the UK

Guys with red hair in the UK have a much harder time finding women.

Actually, what might look good on you is a completely shaved head. Seriously. Guys with your body type and a receding hairline can look pretty good with a shaved head. I don't know how well that would go over in the UK, but here in American a big, burly guy with a shaved head, a rough attitude, and some tough guy clothes would be a hit with the ladies. It's edgy. Then you wouldn't have the problem with the red hair color either. Maybe you could try it. Shave the head, buy some tough guy clothes, and develop that macho attitude. Can't be a Mr. Nice Guy if you want to pull off that look though. I'm not suggesting you be a jerk, but develop an attitude and a gruffer persona. That would look good on you. If you don't like it, you can always let it grow back.

I know, but I figured you guys had ties with each other, and so what is prevailant there might be more acceptable in the UK than it apparently is.

A perm??!!

Ross, your haircut gives me the first impression that you are a no-nonsense, unfussy, working-class kind of guy. It also appears to be a bit conservative to me.

I agree it is not romantic or artistic, but is that who you are?

Or you could go for the
look

This guy has cuckoos leave eggs in his hair because they think it's another bird's nest!

Ross, it'd take you a year to grow your hair this long, but it'd take you two years of not washing your hair to look like that.

I like the guy from Simply Red. I mean, I like his hair a lot.

It would be easier for Ross to grow his hair an inch than to totally change his personality.

It might be fun to try a different thing--acting out a different persona. We can present what we want to the world, just like actors do. Some things we can't change, but some we can. Even if he doesn't change his attitude, I still think that shaved look might be good for him. Might be worth a try. He could certainly change his clothes to go with the shaved look. If it doesn't work out, it will grow back in a short time. I actually think it would be good for him to practice a more tough guy persona. Might help him with his phobias if he practiced having a tougher attitude. If you practice it enough, it becomes assimilated into your personality. It's called the Samauri Effect--practicing something until it becomes second nature to you and becomes a part of you.

Errm. Ever heard of all the conflict between Ireland/N Ireland and England? There is an awful lot of bad history between the countries and some people still hold on to the hatred of the past.

As it is - I really fail to see what all this has to do with red hair

That is old news, and I don't see why that would be an issue here, but perhaps that would explain why people in the UK have an aversion to red hair. Who knows? In any case, I think Ross could totally rock that bald head look, which does look good on guys with his body type, and would solve the issue of having a hair color that is not desirable in his country.

That's surprizing, since Ireland has so many redheads, you would think that the UK would be more accepting of it. You know, if you really do not like your hair color, or think it is that much of a deterrant, you could have the stylist darken it. Might be worth considering, if you think it holds you back. I would think that having longer hair in front would help to minimize a high forehead if it is combed forward. I still suggest going to a stylist--an upscale stylist, and getting their opinion on what would look best on you.

That's Ireland. Red heads in England and Wales (not so sure about Scotland) are very rare. I'm from England.

I'm happy with my colour, it's more of a gold colour than proper red. But when having longer hair, it means I can't wash it as often (otherwise it looks too fuzzly, floppy, and straight), and I'd have to put crap in it to try and make it look at least normal, these two things make my hair look a lot more red which I personally do not like.

As for growing longer hair and having it combed forward, on me it looks like the equivalent of having a comb over (I've tried it before).

I'm happy with my hair being short like it is now, maybe it is a little too short in my avatar, but how my hair usually looks (which is a little bit longer, and you can see it in my last two pics in my profile album), I think looks perfect.

Is there a picture of you with longer hair so we could advise a little more accurately?

Here are lots of hairstyles for men with short, medium, long hair. Pick a couple and let us decide!

Prince Harry has red hair and doesn't do too badly with the ladies.

Thanks for the link, but I'm happy with how my hair looks.

People with red hair aren't particularly common anywhere, they are just more common in Ireland and Scotland.

Don't take this the wrong way Ross but perhaps losing weight would help you. Forget all the queer eye for the straight guy advice about hair.

I don't think Ross needs to lose weight--he's just a big guy with a big frame. And if you want to find out what appeals to women, you ask women, not men.

I tried the whole bald head thing, I looked ridiculous, I don't know whether it's because of the shape of my head or what. Everyone laughed at me anyway.

I'm happy with my clothes, I love the way they look, and I think I look really good in them. I guess maybe they look kind of edgy, I don't know, I guess it depends on what you class as edgy. Anyway, I don't like any other styles of clothing other than my own.

So incredible, all the women telling this guy to shave his head...for having hair with a reddish tint.

If only we men were picky and would tell women with some color of hair arbitrarily considered unattractive that she had to shave it ! LOL.

Is there any end to this madness?

I'm suggesting he shave his head because that look would be good on him and for his body type--not because of the color of hair. But if he didn't like his hair color for whatever reason, that would also solve that issue. And newsflash: you men are plenty picky about women's appearances--what their hair color should be, what length of hair it should be, what their body shape should be, what clothes they should wear, etc. You men are just as picky, if not moreso, about what you like in women as women are in what they like in men.

Ross - your hair colour is fine. I suggest you try growing your hair a bit longer and then go and see a decent hairdresser - not a back street barber where you'll get change out of a tenner.

Alrighty then. I think that look would be cool on you, but whatever. If you've tried it and didn't like it, I guess that settles that.

I am working class, but I'm not conservative at all, in fact chances are, you're probably more conservative than me.

I am artistic, and I think I may be romantic.

Thanks for the critisising my hair everyone, even though I never asked for it.

So the IRA is alive and well in Northern Ireland. I guess, since American news is more focused on terrorist threats and the economy, we don't see much on the news anymore about these clashes in your neck of the woods. I was just curious as to why red hair is considered such an aversion to people in the UK. You are the one that brought up the clashes in Northern Ireland.

I was just going to add to my last post that...

The clothes that I wear already are kind of classed as 'tough looking' (man that sounds so lame), as they're usually worn by thugs, and non thugs too, but they have that kind of look.

Most people here consider the violence around Northern Ireland as terrorism too - over 3,500 deaths since 1969 alone.

Why did I bring up Ireland? No actually I did not. You did.
