problems getting out of bed in the morning...

Recommended Posts

i was wondering if anyone has any gimmicks that help them wake up in the morning. my routine is to usually go to bed around midnight and be up around 8:00a. the problem is that i intend to get up earlier but i snooze my alarm clock for a good 1-1.5 hours before waking. this causes considerable stress for my b/f when he stays over but the bigger issue is that it seems that i have conditioned myself for that amount of snoozing before i can really crawl out of bed without feeling nauseously tired. either i am in the middle of dreams between snoozes and i don't want to stop dreaming or i feel a bit queasy if i get up before i am ready. it has gotten to a point where i dread those (rare) days when i have an early appointment because i don't feel physically capable of getting up early and may miss the appointment.

getting a louder alarm clock is not an option, since i live an apartment building and it would probably drive the neighbors crazy. i also have problems when i go to bed too early so i honestly feel like midnight feels about right for my body clock.

i know this may seem like very little to go on but if anyone has any simple suggestions on how to get a very heavy sleeper out of bed in the morning i would be appreciative. or if anyone may know of any sleep disorders that may be similar to what i described that would be helpful so i could look up some more information. thanks.

I'm very much like you and always have been. Going to bed at 11:30pm is right for me, but I have to get up between 5am and 6am. I've gone to bed earlier, but then I feel crappy the next day, almost like I got TOO MUCH sleep for me.

I'm one who relies on that snooze button, too....I sometimes keep hitting it for a whole hour. Like you, I have to wake up gradually....to just jump out of bed when the alarm goes off, yes, I feel crappy and slightly nauseated and sometimes it even gives me a headache (don't ask me why). But yes, it's difficult when you sleep with someone......it's hard for them, it disturbs their sleep greatly. And I've found that guys are generally much better at just getting up when the alarm goes off/don't need to do the "snooze thing" like we do.

Some things you could try......sitting an alarm clock across your room.....so that you have no choice but to GET UP to turn it off. You can get one that's not so loud that your neighbors will hear it go off. Just the act of having to get out of bed, that's usually enough for me to wake me up enough to realize it's silly to get back into bed to sleep longer.

I think you're going to have to get yourself into the habit of requiring "less" snooze time. Start off giving yourself only 1 hr..then 40 minutes, then 30 minutes......because you likely don't realize it but that sleep you're getting during the time you keep hitting the snooze button, it's really not very sound sleep.....it's very disrupted........

Maybe others here can give you some more suggestions.

Do you drink coffee? I do and I LOVE my first cup of coffee in themorning. I bought a nice thermal caraffe programmable coffeemaker......and I get it ready each night before bed, so that I wake to the smell of fresh coffee.....and this helps to get my rump out of bed, too. :-)

Possibly a lame suggestion, as I have never had any real trouble getting up in the mornings, but;

Have you tried setting up several alarms in your room? Spaced just a few minutes apart? I know when I was in high school I used to keep an alarm on the other side of the room to make myself get out of bed to shut it off. That always seemed to be enough to get me up. Once I'm up, I don't like to crawl back into bed.

Do you fall asleep easily at night? Are you over stressed? Doing any kind of physical activity a short time before I go to bed, and drinking herbal teas, etc, usually help as far as relaxing me so that I sleep well, and not as long (I hate to walk around like a zombie all day).

Maybe someone else has some better advice for you.

Cheers.

(P.S. Do you find that you are tired/sleepy throughout the day? Or just until you are fully awake in the AM? If yes to the first question, check this website: http://www.talkaboutsleep.com/sleepdisorders/idiopathic_hypersomnia.htm#hypersomnia or google for more about Hypersomnia)
