What would you describe as too much makeup?

I usually go out with very little makeup (some powder, blush, maybe lipstick sometimes depending on how I feel), but lately I've been trying eye-liner and foundation.

What do you all think is too much makeup for a woman?

When the color of their face is different than the color of the rest of them. Like Ross said, orange is a bad look.

What you're wearing is not too much for day to day. Too much is very dark make up that LOOKS fake.

I wear foundation, powder, blush, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara. Everyday. It's light though, I don't look "made up", I look put together.

I wear makeup everyday and I always get compliments on it. I wear a little bronzer, blush, mascara, eyeliner and eyeshadow. I don't wear anything heavy. I hate chicks that wear tons of bronzer and clumped on mascara. It looks terrible. My makeup looks good. I have just enough on to accentuates my features.

Wear as much as you like. If you aren't sure ask a stylist what looks good and what does not.

But don't ask someone from the make-up counter in a department store to do your make-up. Although that would give you a very good idea of how much is too much

It isn't the amount of makeup, it's the application and choice of colors. Bobbi Brown is known for a natural look. If you have a Sephora near you, tell them what you want to achieve and ask for suggestions.

When they look like some place like Sephora just exploaded on them. LOL . Really my sister in law spends 3 hours on her hair and make-up each morning and that should give you a clue. I have never once seen her without makeup and it makes me wonder if she's insecure or something. She finds herself wanting to look picture perfect all the time. I remember one time we went to the lake, all day, she still spent 3 hours getting her hair and makeup done and when we got to the lake, she started freaking out "Don't get my hair wet!" Well what did you expect when you knew you were going to be at the lake all day? LOL!

That's an easy distinction.

When it is a female's instinct to 'erase' the face that is already there with the first layer of make-up, before then applying the purely random face she for some reason thinks she wants, as the second layer, then it is "too much make-up".

If with your make-up you are truly flattering your own, natural features, then you are not in violation.

If you become "unrecognizable" to all around you without make-up on, then you use 'too much make-up'.

Where I don't recognize her with it off.

Agree with this.

Personally OP, I think what you listed sounds like too much. Then again, I am not a fan of makeup and I never wear it. I prefer to take care of what I have instead of spending time engaging in what I see as artificial enhancement that has only a temporary effect. As the guy above me says, YMMV.

I agree with those who said it isn't necessarily the amount, but the application and colour choices.

I work in a salon, so I want to look stylish and put together for work every day. I wear light foundation, eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, and blush almost every day. Most people either can't tell I'm wearing makeup, or compliment me on how nice it looks.

Actually my boyfriend's friend once complimented me on my makeup, which was funny coming from a (straight) man. We were sitting at the bar and he looked at me really close and said "Hey! You're wearing makeup! It looks really good. Really classy and not overdone. I really like it!" I was wearing all my full arsenal of foundation/eyeshadow/eyeliner/mascara/blush.

I'm extremely pale so while I don't look *bad* without makeup (my skin is even-toned and unblemished), I feel that I look pale or tired. Makeup just helps to brighten me up a little bit, and bring focus to my best features.

Ask someone who has really good makeup skills if you want some tips. A friend that perhaps you've noticed wearing nice, tastefully-applied makeup. They might be able to give you some pointers. The beauty counters at the department stores can go pretty overboard, IME.

Feelin Frisky

Too much is when clearly, the makeup begins to subtract from one's looks by drawing the eye to unnatural excesses. I'm not a big fan of drawn-on eyebrows that have no hair in them but some women can manage that. But if they go to high and around the eye, you think, geez, I wonder what she looks like.

On the subject, I was a big Star Trek TNG fan and had a thing for Troi. But in the last season after she had lost weight and started wearing the official uniform, she had so much make up on that there was an implied continuation of her mouth that looked almost clown-like. Lovely-looking woman gone ridiculous.

Wow, really. I'm a makeup artist and work for a cosmetic line called MAC. We have to turn people away from our counter constantly since we are so booked with appointments.

Go to your local MAC counter. Those women are ALL wearing way too much makeup, even if done with a neutral palette.

Then head to the Chanel counter. Those women are wearing a good amount of makeup for a "special occasion," but definitely too much for day-to-day.

That's probably a good indicator.

I often wear a "full face" of makeup to work in that I wear light foundation (a tinted moisturizer), eyeliner (and sometimes shadow), mascara, blush, and gloss.

If I don't wear all of that to the office, some people might say, "You look a little off today. Are you not feeling well?"

I take that as makeup playing up my features (like my clear/blonde eyelashes) rather than making me look like a different person.

I left for a first day at college today wearing light foundation (tinted moisturiser), concealer, mascara and pink lip gloss. Any advice to my question - should I wear more make-up (if so what) if I'm looking to attract a potential boyfriend? I have blonde hair, rather big blue eyes and quite pale skinned. :o

This! Especially at MAC. Love their stuff, but next time you're in Bloomies, take a look at any of their makeup artists if you wanna know what "too much makeup" looks like...yowza.

 Personally, I usually LOVE the way the MAC girls (and boys) have their makeup. It would be more appropriate for a club than here on the farm, though…

I love makeup and at times I have really gone crazy with it. I'm sure that an over the top "glam" look is not for everyone, but the main thing is to do it well, whether it's a lot or a little.

My observation has been that when someone says you have 'too much makeup', it doesn't necessarily mean you genuinely have too much on, rather that it is applied tastelessly and too dramatically.

On the other hand, there are very skilled professionals who can take hours applying layer after layer, and most people will even call the look 'natural'.

The only exception is probably when the people who live with you get impatient every time you go out together. In that case, 'too much' probably genuinely refers to quantity and not 'tasteless appearance' :p

Here is a ton of makeup that looks beautiful, to me:

And I even think this is spectacular; I would have worn it (back in the late 70's, in CBGB's)

And here is Pamela Anderson, who is probably wearing the same quantity of makeup with a much less aesthetically pleasing result:
