How sore were you the first time you tried it?

 

I went to a class for the first time in about 4 years last month at my new gym. It wasn't anything too intense, just an intermediate level. And I didn't really feel like I was overdoing it or anything. It was pretty basic stuff.

 

But I was so sore the next 2 days, I could barely get up out of bed. Every part of my body ached.

 

Tips?

I wasn't as sore as you're describing here. You could always mention it to the yoga instructor next time you go.

While I don't typically do yoga (I have in the past), my girlfriend goes a couple times a week in addition to her lifting schedule.

 

She does get sore, but the improvements in her mobility and core strength seem to outweigh the impact on her recovery.

 

My advice is to keep going to class, drink a ton of water (like 120 oz. per day), and make sure you're eating enough protein in your diet.

I'll also echo Tman's hydration suggestion, especially if you're doing the hotbox variety, which I would highly recommend! :)

Ive never been sore after a yoga class ... but during ... well that's another story. I get sore feet and of course some of the positions are downright ... shall I say it ... painful.

 

When the instructor then tells me to "breathe in, breathe out" I want to show her the finger and say f**k you lady

 

Yeah, yoga makes me angry :lmao:

But its totally beneficial afterwards

I've hurt myself more doing yoga than lifting heavy weights. I find it boring as well. If I could afford a private session with an instructor who would create a special program just for me, then it might be worth it. I am not the sort to go to a class, especially after hearing stories of people farting and guys wearing short shorts with the family jewels hanging out. :eek:

I do yoga pretty regularly (not every day though). There was a time I was doing it a few times a week. Now I'd say it's once a week. I like it, but sometimes I find it boring as well. I also prefer it in small doses of 30 minutes or so. The ninety minute or sixty minute classes I used to take...I would get bored/irritated.

I do it, once a week currently, but intend to get back to 3 times a week. It's a good pain, as far as I see it. Having a hot bath or a long shower afterwards and making sure to massage the muscles helps reduce the aches afterwards, like any physical activity.

 

Rehydrate, ensure your sodium levels are okay, shower or bath and make sure to massage your muscles, or get someone to give you a rub down.

Yep, yoga is painful at first, even if you don't push yourself. Hydration is extremely key to yoga---it's much less sore-inducing if you're really truly hydrated, which not many people are. I found actually that doing yoga negated the pain of yoga at first; that's why it can be addictive.

 

Anyway, yoga's my preferred type of exercise. I do a little bit most days and a proper session in a class a few times a week. After awhile, the hurt doesn't really happen anymore. Yoga class can be a form of group meditation---I tend to go to the more spiritual centers, where it's not just about the fitness but the history and practice of yoga, and it relaxes me immensely.

Me.. Raises hand.. I DO. 3 times per week. First time was a couple years back and I was a bit sore because I tried twisting myself in ways my body was not meant to go. Found that out when I woke up the next day sore as heck.:laugh: Yoga is a fantastic practice. I've found so much inner peace through this type of exercise.
