Marriage in the service?

Recommended Posts

Most people don't get married until mid or late twenties and there is a stigma against young marriages, so my question is: Why is there an exception for people in the service who get married at 18? I know several people in the service who've gotten married between 18 and 20 or people who in general get married right away within months of meeting each other and it seems to be no big deal to their families. But if you aren't in the service and planning an actual wedding, it's a huge deal. Anyone have any insight into this?

I guess most families are probably just relieved to see that their kids are going to get some joy. Think about it - their kid's in the service and many are likely afraid that their kids won't live to see 21. So, sometimes any other news can be good news, even if it's getting married very young. And most guys in the military are getting good pay - enough that parents might see them as financially stable enough to marry.

I'm against anyone getting married before age 20. Scratch that - 21. If you can't drink at your own wedding, imo, you're probably too young to get married. It works out for some people but it's a flaming disaster for others.

I just turned 24. I have high school classmates who have married, divorced and remarried. Some have divorced twice and are remarried for a third time. Young marriages can be very turbulent.

That makes sense. I thought about that afterwards. I do also think people should be able to drink at 18. If you can die for your country at 18, you should be able to have a beer before doing so! LOL. :p. Most countries either have a lower drinking age or none at all and ironically, the U.S. is well known for alcohol abuse. Yeah, not being able to drink at your own wedding is wrong, LOL. I think whatever the age of entering adulthood is, you should be able to do everything.

I think it's (a) because going into the service is seen as a potentially stable, longterm career and (b) because of the dangerous nature of the service and the understanding that there may not be time.

I think the reason we don't want kids that young to normally get married is, at least in part, because they don't really have a lifeplan yet. A lot of people probably see going into the service as a lifeplan.

Because married couples in the military get extra money and benefits just for being married..if they are engaged or dating they do not.

Also, married couples get housing allowances and seperation pay if their spouses are deployed. So essentially, when they figure out their partner is "the one" they don't waste time because they won't get any of the benefits for being married if they are just dating/engaged.
