Characteristics and personality wise, how often or how much do people usually change in their 20s and into their 30s?

I'm 24 and I'm a much different person than I was at 19, but I wanted to ask this to get plenty of views and opinions.

In my experience people change from the day they are born until the day they die, and at the same time the person they are today resembles closely the one they were yesterday.

Looking at it from a philosophical point of view, Chinese lore holds that your life goes in 9 and 12-year cycles...

your 'Animal' has a cycle of reappearing every 12 years... this deals with your 'spiritual' destiny and what Fate holds in store for you....but your physical and personal mental development and growth is aligned to a 9-year cycle...

from 0 - 9, you are in the infantile stage of development...

10 - 18, is your adolescent, teen pubescent development, and 'the child becometh the 'man'...

19-27, you establish yourself educationally, and in a career or vocation,

from 28 - 36, you establish your family, gain a spouse and and raise children of your own,

37 - 45, you establish the trimmings and trappings of what you require in life, and make a name for yourself... you've hit the peak of your cycle....

46 - 54, you continue your lineage by seeing your children become adult, and establish lives of their own, and you act as a grand seer, a voice of reason, counsel and guidance....

55 -63, you're an authority, but your professional capacity, is coming to a close... you're looking to wind down, relax and enjoy the fruits of your life-long labours...

.64-72, you're raising the second generation, and resting in the elderly position where others are depending on you for what you can impart through your wisdom - but you in turn are depending on them to impart physical comfort and solace....

73 - 81, you repose. you relax, and you observe your life's achievements, and use this time to reflect and look back on everything that has transpired....

this is a time for you to look inward, contract and withdraw, because your time is now finite...

82 - 90... look at 0 - 9.... and recognise that you have come full circle.... you are dependent on others for all your needs, and as such, you are in your second 'babyhood'....

It would be sort of silly to pretend that there aren't periods of your life when there is drastic change. 40 - 45? Not much of a difference - likely not in life stage nor in emotional development.

11 to 16? Worlds of difference.

And I do agree the 20 to 25 age range would be considered part of that too.

Where was I at 19 - 20? Maybe a year or two into college. I met my first boyfriend when I turned 19. I was a very insecure, clingy, lonely person (not to my ex, though - I sort of kept my distance from him. Somehow, he was even more clingy). I was very naive about a lot of things - my expectations of college, the kind of job I thought I'd get after school. I saw relationships mostly as a system by which to be valued, rather than valuing and loving someone else.

4 to 6 years later it's a different ball game. I'm much more emotionally balanced. I take control of my life much more often rather than sitting back and waiting for something to happen.

I cringe when I think back to who I was at 19. And every then and again I'll run into people from high school or early college who knew me between 14 and 19 - and I can REMEMBER some of the tactless, cruel and stupid things I did back then, sometimes to these people. Does make me want to scream: "I swear I grew up and I'm totally different!" I can't believe who I used to be.

I feel like my personality changed most significantly between 20 and 25. I am far less sensitive and emotional, and much more risk-averse, than I was my whole life through college. I can't help but wonder if it is a physiological thing- they say the frontal lobe is not fully developed until the twenties.

Just wait until you guys hit 40...

Every day. A lot.

But a number of factors come into play. For example, if you went to college, then that will have a different impact compared to spending the last few years working since high school.

There are some milestones that are broadly similar for everyone but individual differences and experiences come into play. We don't know everything that will happen today, let alone tomorrow. Our lives could change in a split-second. And in that split-second, a traumatic experience could change our personality for the better or the worse. Life, it happens and can get in the way of the best laid plans.

Every 3-5 years I feel that I am at a totally different point in life, as I soon turn 42 this month. Maybe a simplified way to describe this would be that the change is definitely more drastic in your younger years as you are finding out who you are, and as you get older you become more comfortable with you who are. Younger, willing to put up with crap. Older, have no patience for any crap.

Would I ever want to go backwards in years? NOT A CHANCE. I have stayed active, and can still play all the sports and activities I used to, and at the same level, just with a little more downtime because of injuries. I have the wisdom that I have gained over the years that I wouldn't give up for any reason. And while I once enjoyed the thrill of traveling, nice toys, and a big salary from my business, there is nothing better than spending a day together with the woman you love, and children who light up the house.

For those that seek maturity, and use their lives to live AND learn, their lives will only get better with age.

maturity goes up (I think someone posted on here that a certain area in the brain responsible for maturity and wise long-term decision making is not fully developped until 25 or 30, and I agree with this) but the core personality of a person will always be the same, in my opinion.

As a girl, I did not change. I was in 20s the same as in 30s.

But, IMO, men are very different in 20s and 30s.

The men in 30s have much less testosterone and much more rationality.

At 26, I am hugely different than I was at 19. I was selfish and made horribly bad choices. The person I once was makes me sick. Not that there was no good, but I did not know what was important in this world. I am sure I am still developing as a person.

From 40-45 you have aged about 12%, from 11-16 you have aged about 50%
