I'm mortified. We never have sex when the kids are awake. Tonight was no exception, got them in bed, finished up my shower, went downstairs thinking they were asleep.

About 20 minutes later, my oldest was knocking on the door to my room asking if I was OK. I don't even have any idea how she overheard - her bedroom is two floors up!

I lied. I told her it was a stomach cramp (I'd had one earlier in the afternoon, yay pregnancy). She's 9, we just had the sex talk and she's still processing it. She seemed to kind of believe me, just kind of accepted the answer. She said it sounded like I was in a lot of pain, and I really didn't want to link THAT to sex since she just learned about it.

I guess I'm just worried I've scarred her for life.

I always used to wonder how parents know when their kids are asleep. Unless you wait until 3:00 in the morning to have sex, there's a good chance the kids are still awake. They don't pass out as soon as they get in bed, you know. And if they're light sleepers and the sex is loud enough, you might wake them up anyway.

The moral of the story is, lock your bedroom door at night. Then if they do hear something, at least they don't have to see it.

Yes, lock the door and maybe put on some music to drown out the noise. Otherwise, just don't be so noisy unless you're making a porno.

She's 9. She'll forget. Just behave.

I walkedin on my parents when I was 8. Mom was supposed to be up tp take me to school. I got so upset by her taking so long I opened their door.

They didn't even notice. It was weird.

I don't think it really traumatized me or changed my long-term view of sex into something evil or ludicrous.

Welcome to the normal world of human nature; kids have been catching their parents having sex for hundreds of years and there aren't that many scarred for life because of the experience.

They'll figure it out eventually and just learn their parents are normal. No biggie...

That's nothing compared to when I overheard my dad have sex with his exW when I was 17. It was also only 9pm at night. He couldn't have been more obvious when he told my boyfriend to leave and having sex barely 5 minutes later. Your daughter is 9, she probably didn't even understand it or think anything of it. If your daughter is a teenager, that's something else entirely.

Thanks, everyone. We did have the door locked. And we have agreed to turn on some loud music or a movie next time, just to confuse the sounds. We're never very "noisy" but I guess sound travels more in the house than I initially believed.

dont worry at least she didnt walk on while your with someone other then the other parent. i have a friend who seriously hates his parents for having sex with other people, when he was a kid!

She's probably been hearing it for a long time. :p:laugh:

Really its just a fact of life, not knowing would scar them more or trying to hide it (think of what that says)...best to just say it how it is, leaves no wondering or no fear thinking you're being hurt.

Ironic assumption. I only have a vague idea of where my kids' father is right now (or has been for quite some time). :o

I've heard my parents at it multiple times. It can only be described as traumatising. I absolutely hated it and cringed.

I thought that way as a kid. Looking back it doesn't seem so bad. I am sure every kid has over heard their parents. Just do what you can to prevent it from happening again.

I saw my parents hug once, that was about it. It was traumatizing, I hated how they didn't sleep in the same room, made me feel like a mistake or something.

So, really, it could be worse.

It wouldn't have mattered if her daughter is a teenager, sex is normal, why pretend it doesn't happen?!

My parents were horribly repressed, so when I was 18 I still barely knew anything, it was a taboo subject, I wouldn't have dreamed of asking them any questions about sex :(

If I had kids I'd want to be very open with them about sex, so that they don't feel ashamed or guilty in any way.
