Author USMCHokie
Taking up fly fishing has been a relatively (been doing it less than a year) new passion for me that has helped drive me to get out of the house. It's nice having something to plan out and look forward to other than the gym (don't get me wrong, I love the gym, but diversity is great). I know you're probably pretty far from any fishable streams, but various outdoor activities has always been key in igniting the "zest" you speak of, at least for me. This is why people get into things like hiking, backpacking, fishing, hunting, camping, dirt bike riding, shooting sports, etc. Yea, and there's actually some decent hiking, biking, and camping in this area...not to mention you can literally drive out into the middle of the Mojave Desert and shoot to your heart's content... But I have definitely lost "interest" in a lot of the outdoor stuff I used to do when I was younger...either the interests were replaced, or I am now just too lazy to get out and do it...it's probably more of the latter... wwwjd
two things, Hokie. IF you wanna try the church thing, you GOTTA find one that is your style of "Hip" AND completely relevant to today's world. If you are non-religious and go to a place that sings nothing but hymns (songs) that sound like organ-driven funeral marches, you will be turned off and never look back. Also, the places that simply read verses with no relationship to your current life in 2012 will leave you bored and uninsterested. If you find a place that is hip to your style of music - country? rock? folk? trance? whatever, it helps you enjoy it so much more. No offense to you verse reading churches, but to someone who maybe has never been, that stuff just does nothing for you. It's better to explain WHY verse whatever works in today's world for people right now. Makes it seem like maybe all this god talk stuff COULD make sense for him. Next, increase your hobby count. Go to any big bookstore with a large magazine rack and browse until you find THREE diverse topics of stuff you are not already interested in, but might be, and buy those 3 magazines. Read all the way through them, adopt it, or toss it and go find another one. Lots of cool stuff out there from paintball to needlepoint. The world IS your oyster. Now, go get those pearls!! january2011
Thanks for the links January.....I just found a recipe for the next girl's nite dinner party!!!!! Hugs........... You're welcome! Hokie, another technique I use is to pick an ingredient that catches my eye in the supermarket and learn how to use it in a dish. Unless you eat huge portions, there's usually enough product to try it in a variety of different dishes. I discovered pesto this way, when I was a university student. If you're interested in experimenting with ingredients and flavour combinations in different cuisines, you might find these links helpful: Mirepoix (cuisine) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Holy trinity (cuisine) - eNotes.com Reference Another foodie website that seems popular in the US is ChowHound: http://www.chow.com/ It's particularly good for local restaurant recommendations as well as advice about home-cooking. Being in California Chokie I know there are plenty of "non-traditional" churches in your area. Hope you check it out and give it a shot.

Yea, I didn't go to any today, but I think I'm going to talk to my Chaplain about it this week and see what he suggests as far as actual services to try out...why not, right...? DontWorryBHappy
Yo yo Marine. Well, your post sounds exactly the way I feel... and I do mean exactly. As in, it's as if you went inside my head. I used to be passionate about playing the flute..... in like 6th grade. I honestly can't remember feeling passionate about anything since, except for the ex before my last ex. But that's a person. I'd rather feel that kind of passion for an activity of some sort. I've looked into all kinds of stuff to remedy this... New musical instruments, new jobs, applied for different schools, considered taking everything and moving somewhere else, considered taking martial arts and dance classes, thought about becoming a chocolatier (lol). I guess I can't give much advice, but you are so not alone. Also, I'm not really religious either... I duno if going to church would help me. I tend to feel like an outcast there because I'm not all into it these days.
Teknoe
I duno if going to church would help me. That's exactly why people visit churches every week. They want to find out if something will click at this stage in their life. If it doesn't click, then no one is forcing you to come back next week. It it clicks, you're free to return next week. But it's nice to give yourself a shot to be surprised.
Leegh
Possibly you liked where you were living before better. I'm not saying anything negative about CA, it's a great state, but if this feeling came on shortly after you moved to CA, it could be the problem. If you continue to feel like this, possibly you could take a vacation back to where you used to live, and see if you feel revived. It sounds like you may have a feeling of calmness now, which may not be a bad thing.
Pacman
Have you tried training in MMA? You will not be bored. You will be constantly learning new things. The moment you think you have it, you get a nice left hook to the face. Don't like striking? Try some ground game (Brazilian jiu-jutsu or wrestling) I live a pretty boring life as well. Eat, Gym, Work, sleep. Weekends get hammered. Now I actually look forward to getting out of work to train MMA. Although I do have to take creatine, since I'm always tired after work. Now it'll be like this until I get into med school.
