My GF just noticed a small lump in her left breast. It is painful to touch. Last week none of this existed at all. Ten years ago she had a similar experience in this same area. She had it scanned etc and was just told to keep on top of it. Nothing until now. Is this signs of breast cancer or maybe nothing to worry about? I am worried.

Get her to a doctor.

Malign breast lumps are usually not sensitive or painful, but it could be a cyst in one of the milk ducts.

she MUST get it checked immediately though - for goodness' sake!

Asking a discussion forum should be the last thing on your mind - go get medical attention.

You know it makes sense.

It could be something hormonal--changes in hormone levels throughout a woman's cycle can cause breast tissue to change. Is she nearing her period?

That said, sudden changes in breast tissue should NOT be ignored. She should make an appointment with the OB/GYN to have it checked out, especially if it's still there after a couple days.

If it's nothing, she simply has a chance to build her relationship with her doctor and get a checkup. If, in worst case scenario, it turns out to be SOMETHING, she has taken responsibility for her health and caught a problem early. That's especially important for young women--they are less likely to get breast cancer, but when they do, it's more likely to be aggressive.

Just don't mess around with it. A friend of mine felt a lump and ignored it for 7 months until her boyfriend found it and made her go to the doctor. Turned out to be stage IV breast cancer--she was 30 years old. She lived to 35.

If you and she are worried, just go and get it checked out for your peace of mind. There's no reason to panic, but there's every reason for her to take control of her health.

I assume a doctor's appointment has been scheduled and you're simply seeking reassurance in the meantime?

I hope that's the case.

I've had lumps appear in my breasts and they've turned out to be benign.

I never delay in having them checked out.

Here is what I've learned from my physician:

Some women are prone to cysts given they have more fibrous tissue which along with caffeine consumption (my doctor said), can lead to the formation of these lumps.

If the lump is smooth, sizeable, and yielding, there's a bit less concern.

If it's hard like a knuckle and doesn't really move but instead feels anchored, that's a bit different.

As josie said, the menstral cycle also has influence.

Please let us know the results of her exam.

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you both in the meantime.

Thanks for all the quick responses. She goes for a scan tomorrow. The lump seems not attached and moves around some what. She is in good spirits about it and is working hard in the gym as always.

Wish her well, and tell her to always keep on top of things like this.

Sensible girl....

Oh, and thanks for coming in with feedback. ;)

Turns out it is a cyst. yeh.

They may have to drain it.

Great news. :)

Aspirating a cyst is a wee bit uncomfortable but so happy that's all it is.

Thanks for updating us.
