Need some advice with my life

My parents are both alcoholics. They are at each others throats every day. My father is on disability, and he has not been getting his disability checks for 3 months now.

It has been me and my mom working and paying the bills. I am 17. My brother is 22, he does not have a job, and does nothing to help the situation.

I need to get out of this. I will be turning 18 this 4th of July. I'm afraid of being homeless. I have some family around here, but I am too embarassed to turn to them. I'm almost 18. An adult.

Is there any type of government program or something, anything, that can get me away from all this. I just want a normal life where I can work and finish school. Enjoy and live life. I'm afraid of being homeless. I want to be able to finish school and live on my own.

I don't know what to do. I need a break from all this. I just can't stand it anymore. It has been like this for at least 5 years. I want out.

First off, your parents could quit spending so much money on booze and they wouldn't be so broke, eh? Alcohol (or smokes for that matter) is not free.

You can get federal grants to send you through college. Get a job working 40 hours a week at minimum wage if you have to. Go to school at night, online or on Saturdays. Never start drinking and give yourself a better life than what your parents have given themselves and YOU.

There is government funding that you can get if you cannot support yourself.

Are you still in high school? If so, go talk to a guidance counselor and tell them everything. See if they can help get you into a school where you can live on campus and do work study.

If not, check into your state's social services. Being 17, you should be able to get some help from the Child Protection Agency, or whatever it's called in your area.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much help is available to you if you just look and ask for it. Do keep us updated on what you find out, okay? Good luck!

I feel for you!!! I left home when I was 15, lived with friends and girlfriends until I finished school, went to college all on my own. I never stepped a foot in that house again. It was my Step-Father who was the drunk. My mom was fine except she sat back and watched him beat the crap out of her four kids.

Listen, I know it's a scary thing for you to go out on your own. But trust me, and I mean really trust me when I say that you will do just fine!!! Don't feel guilty about leaving either. That haunted me forever leaving my Mom and my siblings in that situation, but you know something, they have a choice too!!

Do you have a car? Trade it in on a van and live in it if you have to. I'm telling you from experience.....you will have a better life if you get out NOW!!!!

I was ridiculed and looked down upon by the high school principal and counceler, had to pay tuition to finish high school, work 2 jobs on 4 hours of sleep a day.....but I made it, I made it without anybody's help financially. You'll have to be tough, but I know you can do it.

And don't think for one second that you won't have a chance at a good life either.....I've been married to a very sexy, ( Has been asked to model, even recently ), very loving woman for 16 years, I make a 6 figure income, and I have 5 wonderful kids.

It took a lot of guts to do what I did and a lot of hard work, the hardest thing was to leave and not feel guilty.....just remember, it's not your fault that they chose to live that way.....and yes, don't ever take a drink....you were born an alcoholic, and that my friend, will kill you and your chances to a great life.

If you ever need anyone to talk to....I'll and we'll be here to help you.....

Good Luck on your soon to be journey......
