Computer engineering vs finance major

Recommended Posts

I'm assuming he lives in the western world where there's internet and they speak English.

I know plenty of stuff about computers, but getting a job in IT without a degree is not easy at all.

The first is quite a bit of a generalization. There are several countries that fit your description in which CompEng is not in significant demand.

You can't just 'know stuff about computers', it needs to translate to practical experience and knowledge in popular systems and/or languages. I won't argue that a degree will help, but I know experienced programmers who got the job over fresh grads despite not having a degree.

sorry for the late reply, but yes, from the US and I'm currently in the LA area. However, the school i plan to transfer to will be in Santa Cruz, which is close to silicone valley. The only thing is, i don't want to move to the silicone valley after graduation. I was never a fan of that area or San Francisco either.

I would like to stay in a big city preferably. I haven't decided on which discipline of computer engineering to pursue, but most likely software engineering.

Should be no problem finding software engineering jobs there.

Try out programming and see how you like it. It's an often necessary part of most IT/compsci disciplines, but especially so if you're considering software engineering. Yes, the most important part of software engineering is the design, etc etc, but you won't be doing much of that til you've moved up the rungs in a company, and doing so involves programming. Lots of it.

My recommendation to start out with would be Java/C++. Stuff like Python and Visual Basic is easy and often used as a primer, but you'll rarely find a company actually asking for Python/VB coders. If you can sink your teeth into Java/C++ and really get into it, you're headed well towards software Eng.

Im trying to determine which field i should enter between anything in finance or computer engineering.

Currently, I'm attending a community college and have already taken classes towards computer engineer. However, I've been working in the retail banking industry for the past 8 years and have gained customer service and sales skills. I understand that choosing a career field would be based on my own preference and what I'm comfortable with, but Im asking here to see other people's insights/experiences. Im open to obtaining a financial degree and am considering to aim for an investment banker/financial analysts/financial manager.

I have taken a majority of computer engineering classes so far and i should be accepted in a university next year for it, but i don't have any experience in any computer engineering job yet.

Can you guys give me your opinions and advice please?

It depends on what you feel comfortable with and motivated by.

If you prefer spending long hours working on solving and troubleshooting problems with devices, go ahead with computer engineering

however if you prefer more customer relations stuff, do finance

On another note, you could always do computer-related work as a volunteer.
