Stopping nervous tics

So I tend to have a couple of nervous tics, but can't seem to stop them. One is nail-biting, and another is picking at my beard. I've tried several things to stop them, but I can't seem to do so. I've tried writing myself reminders everyday to stop doing it, I've even tried bad-tasting nail polish to stop the fingernail biting, but I actually just bite through anyway. Has anyone else had either of these two tics and stopped successfully? How did you do it?

It's become a habit..Such a habit that I'm sure you're not aware you're doing it, especially the beard picking.

Ask a trusted friend and some family members to help you with this. Ask them to tell you to stop (nicely of course) every time you do this. Every habit can be broken!

Are you nervous about something? or suffer from anxiety? If so, CBT(cognitive behaviour therapy) can really help you.

I used to bite my nails when I was younger. what stopped me was a family member treating me to manicure. Sounds dumb but it worked. I just made myself get out of the habit. A friend of mine used to bite her nails and she stopped by allowing herself to bite her big toenail!! She did that once or twice, hurt her teeth (also was grossed out by it) and stopped.

Will power and frame of mind is very important to stop these types of habits.

If it's a 'tic' then it's not controllable, unless meds are there to help.

Exercise to burn off nervous energy. Learn to do something with your hands -- cook, paint, draw, sew, throw a ball with a neighbor's kid. I have a male friend who knows how to knit and he loves it. His friends get lovely gifts at Christmas.
