Atheist Converts to Catholicism

Recommended Posts

Has anyone seen this?

Prominent Atheist Blogger Becomes Catholic

There is a lot of talk of morality vs. sin these days and I don't understand why people think you have to be religious to be moral. I have practiced and professed Christianity since I was a teen, but have never thought that people that didn't believe as I did didn't have morals. And I've never understood the presence of "sin" to be the absence of morals.

This blogger states (and I paraphrase) that she has always been moral, and that she couldn't prove the basis of her morality (as an atheist always claims one should be able to do: prove everything).

What do you guys think?

I saw her interview on CNN and honestly didn't feel she converted to anything.

She never once professed the basic tenets of Christianity or Catholicism.

She didn't seem to believe a word she was saying.

I don't know her. Can't judge much. There are atheists who are passive in their lack of belief and atheists who militantly despise religion. American Christians are often propagandized into thinking every atheist is the latter. Apparently this woman is the former. Surely there are lots of positions in between. Personally I militantly despise religion and know without doubt that there is no supernatural intervention in the direction of the universe. That is not to say it wasn't "created"--just that once it begun, it has been on its own ever since and we are a product of processes way way downstream of any kind of creation. The reason I despise religion is because it hardens otherwise good people into defense of fraud or mental illness passed off as divinity.

Hmmmm. So maybe she is a passive new convert?

Somehow I doubt that.

I've never seen a new convert to anything ever be passive about it.

Slightly on topic, but a friend of mine recently converted to catholicism too.

In a couple of years his new daughter will be of school age and it helps get your kids into the best private schools here if you share the same religion.

I think it's a PR stunt to promote her blog or an upcoming book she's written. I saw some of her interview and read her blog and think she's as genuine as pleather.
